Blake Griffin was the first man to go in the NBA draft last night. The Los Angeles Clippers used the top pick to select the Oklahoma All-American, who averaged 22.7 points and 14.4 rebounds last season. Memphis took Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet second before Arizona State guard James Harden was chosen third overall by Oklahoma City.

The New Jersey Nets have parted with high-scoring Vince Carter, sending him to the Orlando Magic with Ryan Anderson for point guard Rafer Alston, shooting guard Courtney Lee and power forward Tony Battie. The eight-time All-Star has averaged 23.5 points over a 10-year NBA career.

The U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Omaha in 2012, with a temporary pool again being set up inside the Qwest Center. USA Swimming made the announcement yesterday. The trials will choose the U.S. team for the London Games, which will be held June 25-July 2. The 2008 trials were held at the Qwest Center for the first time last year, averaging more than 12,000 fans each night over eight days. Nine world records were set in the temporary 50-meter competition pool. A warm-up pool will also be installed inside the 17,000-seat Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. The adjacent convention center will again host a 100,000-square-foot sponsor and fan experience area.

First round play at the 42nd Nebraska Match Play Championship is complete with 32 golfers advancing to the second round at Willow Lakes Golf Club. Defending champion, Brandon Crick of McCook, defeated Tony Mundt of Omaha 3 and 1 and will meet Patrick Hanzel of Lincoln today. Qualifying medalist, Andy Sajevic of Fremont, knocked off Anthony Baranowski of Omaha 5 and 4 and will play Ross Friehe of Papillion today. O’Neill’s John Hurley defeated Omaha’s Ryan Sutter 7 and 6, Beemer’s Richard Schneider beat Lincoln’s Will Anderson 3 and 2, and Columbus’ Greg Pohlmann lost to Omaha’s Taylor Hobin 5 and 4.

Nebraska First District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry supports a thoughtful and reasoned debate on the future of health care. Fortenberry tells WJAG NEWS a recent survey shows most Americans are happy with their health care but alarmed about increasing costs. Fortenberry says the two questions that need to be addressed are how can we improve health care outcomes and how can we reduce costs.

A northeast Nebraska man who vanished with his wife and children after being questioned on domestic-abuse allegations has been sentenced to prison for probation violation. The Pierce County Attorney's Office said Thursday that Matthew Schade, 26, was sentenced in district court to an indeterminate term of 18 months to 36 months for burglary. Authorities say Schade violated terms of his probation by stealing a truck and having a gun.

A legislator from Northeast Nebraska says the state may need to find a better way to keep down the population of horses. Senator Cap Dierks of Ewing has proposed a summer study on horse facilities. He says it is about the only way to humanely control horse populations with rising numbers of unwanted and neglected horses.

A Northeast Nebraska state park is preparing to open its latest attraction, two new "green" cabins. Ponca State Park Superintendent Jeff Fields says the two-bedroom units are energy efficient and made almost completely out of recycled materials.

Platte County Extension Educator Allan Vyhnalek continues to work with farmers as they decide whether to enroll in the Average Crop Revenue Election, or ACRE, program. He says signing up for ACRE might NOT be the best decision for every year of the commitment required, but it could be significant enough in one year to make up for the other three. Vyhnalek is holding a computer workshop Tuesday at Central Community College in Columbus. For more information, call the Platte County Extension Office, 563-4901.

The city of Norfolk Health Division has begun mosquito fogging in parks and residential areas of Norfolk. City Health Official John Kouba says fogging is generally conducted between 7:30 and 10:30 in the evening.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning for a Norfolk musician who has died after a battle with cancer. Denny Reeves died Wednesday morning. He was 63. Reeves played with Little Joe and the Ramrods, the group that eventually became Smoke Ring. He was the originator of the Johnny Carson Billboard Association which raised money to erect billboards honoring Johnny Carson at the entrances to Norfolk. Funeral services for Denny Reeves will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Norfolk. Visitation will be from 3 until 8 Friday at the Home for Funerals.
