The defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays have ruined 10-game winner Roy Halladay's return to the mound after a stint on the disabled list with a groin injury. Carl Crawford and Pat Burrell homered and the Rays won their sixth straight game, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 to drop Halladay's record to 10-and-2

The Chicago Cubs are slumping elsewhere but continue their fine play in the Steel City with a 3-1 win over the Pirates. The Cubs have won 20 of their last 25 games played in Pittsburgh.

 

Houston center Yao Ming has an injury that the Rockets team physician says could potentially end the career of the 7-foot-6 All-Star center. Dr. Tom Clanton, the Houston Rockets' team physician, tells the Houston Chronicle that Yao's broken left foot "has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career-threatening."

Eldorado Hills Golf Club hosted the Nebraska PGA Junior Qualifier on Monday. Mark Gubbels of Yankton shot a 77 to win the Boys 16-18 Division by two strokes over Norfolk’s Broderick Baker. Sioux Falls’ Molly Donohue claimed the Girls 16-18 Division by carding a 75. Norfolk’s Nicole Mooberry placed second with an 80. Andrew Holloway of Scottsbluff shot a 71 to win the Boys 13-15 Division by one stroke over Plainview’s Mitchell Klooz.

News Briefs: 

Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services has a new executive director. Gov. Dave Heineman on Monday appointed Kerry Winterer of Omaha to lead the agency.

Roads, taxes, and communications seem to be things that most government entities in Madison County have in common. Those topics of joint interest came up last night at a meeting of representatives of the City of Norfolk, Northeast Community College, Norfolk Public Schools and Madison County Board of Commissioners. The group plans to meet again in September

Costs for all cases filed in Nebraska courts are going up. Filing costs for all cases will go up $1 on Wednesday to supplement the state's judges' retirement fund. Judges and others covered by the plan also will be required to increase their contributions. A second round of increases takes effect Aug. 30. The changes will push traffic ticket fees to $48 - up from $45, for example. Divorce filing fees will increase to $157. Filing a small claims case will cost $26.

A former lieutenant governor of Nebraska and the acting director of the Nebraska Farm Service Agency have been appointed to positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Federal officials announced Monday that Maxine Moul has been appointed USDA rural development director for Nebraska. Dan Steinkruger has been named director of the Nebraska Farm Service Agency.

Last week's heat killed more than 2,100 cattle across eight Nebraska counties. Tim Reimer with the Nebraska Farm Service Agency says he received a report of at least one feedlot that lost 250. Many livestock producers were already struggling with high feed costs.

The second week of Norfolk Family YMCA River Camp is coming up July 6th through the 10th, and parents are urged to register their children now. YMCA Marketing Director Barb Preusker says a bus picks up and drops off campers at the Y and on the west edge of Norfolk each day. Special activities are offered each day, including archery, crafts, conservation education and water activities. River Camp is held at the Kiwanis Camp west of Norfolk.

A few seats remain on the second annual wildflower tour, sponsored by the Northeast Nebraska RC&D. This year's tour, called "Blossoms and Butterflies," will be July 8th and includes stops in Antelope County. Registrations are needed by July 2nd.
