News Briefs:

Nebraska has been left out of $4.35 billion in school reform grants being dangled by the U.S. Department of Education. The department Thursday named 16 finalists for the grants, which are designed to reward states that have adopted and will continue implementing innovative reforms to improve student performance. Winners will be chosen in April. Nebraska officials had applied for nearly $123 million in funding.

Funeral services will be held this weekend for a longtime Norfolk area physician. Dr. William Becker Sr. died Wednesday at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk. Services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stanton with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lynch. Visitation will be today from 3-to-8 p.m. at the church. Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

The rain forecast for this weekend reminds us that severe spring and summer weather is just around the corner. The National Weather Service will once again sponsor storm spotter training courses across the state. In Norfolk, spotter training will be offered Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center.

When the snow melts, homeowners are likely to see gray, dead, crusty patches in their yards.  Extension Educator Kelly Feehan says some of the spots will be snow mold, while others will be areas where the turf suffocated under the snow and ice. She says either problem can be remedied with patience and some overseeding to promote regrowth.

New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has paid for another Lincoln student's family trip to Disney World. This is the third year that Chamberlain has selected a hardworking student from one of his former elementary schools. Belmont fifth-grader Riley Ressen, his mother and his little sister were in Orlando, Fla., for four days and spent time with the baseball player.

A BLT might be harder to come by in the coming weeks. Florida's January cold snap has taken a toll and tomato growers have lost about 70 percent of their crops. Florida is the only U.S. state that produces large amounts of tomatoes in the winter.
