The Norfolk Catholic boys basketball squad looks to reach the State Tournament tonight after a three year absence.  The Knights are 21-2 on the year and have won 16 games in a row and 20 of their last 21 as they meet Valentine in the C-1-5 District Final at Burwell at 7:00.  Valentine is 12-9 on the year, but have claimed five games in a row.  The Knights are outscoring their opponents on average 63.2-42.7.  The Badgers are outscoring their foes on average 56.1-50.9.

 

The Omaha World Herald has updated it’s high school girls basketball rankings.  In Class “C-1”, Lutheran High Northeast is the new number one after moving up from second, Crofton remains sixth, and Norfolk Catholic has fallen from the top ten. 

 

The Region XI Tournament brackets have been released regarding the Northeast Hawks men’s and women’s basketball teams.  The Hawks men battle Laramie County Community College of Wyoming in the opening round on Friday at 2:00 in Sheridan, Wyoming.  The Hawks men enter the tournament with a 14-16 record and have dropped four of their last five games.  Laramie College is 20-10 and have claimed ten wins in a row.  The Hawks women face Northwest College of Wyoming in the opening round at 8:00 on Saturday in Sterling, Colorado.  The Hawks women are 21-9 and have won three of their last four games.  Northwest College is 11-17 on the year.

News Briefs: 

 Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett says consumers are still not spending much. He appeared this morning on CNBC, two days after releasing his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. Buffett says the economy is improving but at a very slow rate.

 

Sen. Greg Adams says progress is being made to resolve a funding dispute among Nebraska's community colleges, but the lawmaker from York says there's still work to be done. Adams attended a weekend summit in Nebraska City with representatives of the six community colleges and the Nebraska Community College Association.

 

A Norfolk man was injured following a one vehicle accident Sunday morning on Highway 24 three miles east of Stanton. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says a sport utility vehicle driven David Carranza, 23, left the road and struck a dirt embankment about 150 yards off the roadway. He had to be removed from the vehicle and was transported to Norfolk's hospital for treatment of back injuries. Unger says Carranza was also cited on suspicion for driving while intoxicated following the 9 a.m. accident.

 

A literacy program designed to help strengthen reading skills and create an interest in books resumes Tuesday night at Lincoln Elementary School in Norfolk. Each bilingual Prime Time Reading program begins with a light meal -- and continues with storytelling and a discussion based on award-winning children's books.

 

Today marks Nebraska's 143rd year of statehood. Secretary of State John Gale and his cast of Territorial characters spent all of last week traveling across the state celebrating Nebraska's birthday with over 3,000 fourth graders. One of those stops was in Norfolk, where students from 14 area schools took part in the celebration.

 

President Barack Obama owes his Canadian counterpart a case of beer. Obama made the friendly wager with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before Sunday's U.S.-Canada Olympic gold medal game. Canada beat the United States 3-2 in overtime. President Obama had a case of Yuengling, a Pennsylvania regional brew, riding on the game. Harper wagered 24 bottles of Molson. The beer battle pitted Canada's oldest brewery against the oldest beer maker in the United States.
