News Briefs:

Occasional light snow will continue through the morning across northeast Nebraska prompting a Winter Weather Advisory to remain in effect through noon. The National Weather Service reports an additional one-to-two inches of snow is possible through that time. This additional snow combined with totals through 4 a.m. will bring total snowfall to around four inches. Norfolk had seen about half of that through 4 a.m. Slick roads will be the primary impact with this system. Snowpacked to icy roads can be expected during the morning drive. Visibilities may drop below a mile at times as well.

Nebraska lawmakers have given first-round approval to a bill that would allow school districts to unify without court involvement. Supporters say its a way to encourage rural districts to share services but still keep their own identities. Unified districts often keep their own buildings and sports teams.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held next week in the Norfolk Public Schools. Parents are urged to bring a picture ID with them to conferences so they can get access codes and other information about the district's new on-line service for parents.

Today is the last day to register for a farm management and grain marketing meeting Tuesday in Columbus. University of Nebraska Extension Educators Allan Vyhnalek and Tim Lemmons will give the presentation that evening at Wunderlichs. For more information, call the Platte County Extension Office.

Valentine's Day is less than 10 days away, and staff of a Norfolk flower shop are encouraging you to order early this year. Linda Brady of The Village Flower Shop says that, because the holiday falls on Sunday, many customers want their flowers delivered on Friday.

The Saints win! If you believe a video game. "Madden NFL 10" predicts New Orleans will defeat the Indianapolis Colts 35-31. The winning play will be a touchdown pass from Saints QB Drew Brees late in the fourth quarter. Electronic Arts reports its video game soothsayer also predicts Brees will be the MVP. As for accuracy, a company spokesman says their popular Madden NFL game has picked the right winner in five of the last six Super Bowls.
