Nebraska has beefed up its 2010 football recruiting class with two players who waited until letter-of-intent signing day to announce their decisions.  Quarterback Brion Carnes of Bradenton, Fla., and safety Corey Cooper of Maywood, Ill., along with 19 other players, made their pledges to the Cornhuskers official yesterday.  Recruiting services have the two listed among the highest-rated prospects signed by coach Bo Pelini.  Four players were in-state recruits.  Norfolk High’s Tyson McGill is one of twelve walk-ons from the state.

News Briefs:

A series of upper level disturbances will affect the central Plains over the next few days. The National Weather Service reports it does not look like this system will produce heavy snow in any 12 hour period, but snow totals by late Friday afternoon could reach up to five inches in portions of eastern Nebraska. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued through noon on Friday. A mix of rain and snow will spread across the area this morning and should change to all snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulations during the day today should be an inch or less at most locations. Light snow then is forecast from tonight into Friday morning.

Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce officials unveiled their plans to the public Wednesday for a new 10,000 square foot Chamber building and visitors center. Chamber President Dennis Houston says the new building will be located on downtown on the southeast corner of 7th Street and Norfolk Avenue. He says in addition to the Chamber, other tenants will be housed in the two million dollar building -- the Elkhorn Valley Economic Development Council, Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Norfolk Area Recruiters, the Norfolk SCORE Chapter and the Nebraska Business Development Center.  Houston says the building will be financed by private donations, foundations and grants with a capital campaign officially kicking off last night.

Plans call for making 25th Street on Norfolk's west side a three lane road from Benjamin Avenue south to the Highway 275-Bypass. City Public Works Director Dennis Smith says they continue working with highway officials on the federal aid project. He told the Norfolk Planning Commission this week he's optimistic right-of-way acquisition along 25th Street can get underway this year with construction beginning in 2011.

A proposal is being finalized that would provide for either a late start or early dismissal one day a week for students in the Norfolk Public Schools. The School Board will be asked to approve the proposal Monday night. It is an effort to provide more time for teachers to work together on training, changes and other concerns.

The ketchup packet has been around for more than 40 years and people still complain it's too messy, too small, too hard to open. Now, H.J. Heinz Co. has redesigned it. The new design has a base that's more like a cup for dipping and also a tear-off end for squeezing. It holds three times as much ketchup.
