Nebraska coach Bo Pelini will unveil his 2010 recruiting class at a news conference this afternoon.  The Cornhuskers could sign up to 20 players.  Running back Braylon Heard of Youngstown, Ohio, and offensive lineman Andrew Rodriguez of Aurora are among the top prospects who have pledged to sign.  Recruiting analysts project the Huskers to have a class ranked among the top 30 nationally.  That rating could get a big boost if a couple uncommitted star prospects sign with Nebraska.  Chief among them are 6’3, 234-pound defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa of Portland, Ore., and 6’2, 203-pound safety Corey Cooper of Maywood, Ill.

The Mid States Conference Basketball Tournament continued yesterday with boys action.  Norfolk Catholic improved to 14-2 and won their ninth game in a row after beating Battle Creek 82-43.  It also marked their 13th victory in their last 14 contests.  Jarren Heng had 28 points and eight steals while Ben Uhing recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.  The Knights will take on Pierce in the semifinals on Friday at Northeast Community College at 7:45.  Other scores in the tournament saw Pierce whip Boone Central 47-17, Hartington Cedar Catholic cruise past Madison 101-26, and Wayne top West Point Central Catholic 73-52.

Norfolk officials have applied for a block grant to help in the purchase of the former Protient plant. Tom Higginbotham, executive director of the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District, says Milk Specialties Global of Carpenterville, Illinois, plans to purchase the plant for $10-million, with the block grant applied toward the purchase.

Three residents in southeast Norfolk told of blowing dirt and sand near their homes during a public hearing on a request by Lyman-Richey Corporation to continue mining for sand and gravel northwest of 1st Street and Sherwood Road. The Norfolk Planning Commission tabled the company's request until its next meeting on February 17th.

Norfolk authorities have received several calls Tuesday from citizens and financial institutions regarding a credit card scam that seems to be targeting the area. Police Captain Leon Chapman says one call  asked a victim to phone a specific number to update their card. Another told a victim they needed to reactivate their card and could do so by punching in their credit card number on their phone. Chapman says legitimate credit card companies do not operate in this manner. He says whomever has made these calls has "spoofed" the numbers you see on your caller ID to make appear they are coming from a legitimate source.

Nebraska lawmakers have stopped short of a first-round vote on repealing the state's motorcycle helmet law. But signs point to a close vote on the repeal measure. An amendment approved Tuesday would require that motorcyclists have insurance for long-term care.
