The Indianapolis Colts are maintaining that Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney has a low ankle sprain, not a torn ligament, and that he is still questionable for the Super Bowl.  But a person close to Freeney tells The Associated Press that Freeney's ankle is "really bad" and could keep him out of the big game.

 

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul will have arthroscopic knee surgery and could be sidelined for one to two months.  Paul first hurt his left knee in a game at Golden State on Wednesday.  Yahoo! Sports, citing unidentified sources close to Paul, reported Sunday night that test results revealed a partially torn Meniscus.  Paul, who also missed eight games earlier this season because of a sprained left ankle, is averaging 20.4 points and 11.2 assists per game this season.

 

The Omaha World Herald has updated it’s boys & girls high school basketball rankings for Classes “A” & “B”.  The Norfolk High boys are ranked number one in the “Nebraska Top 10” & Class “A” after moving up from second.  They are currently 14-1 on the year after beating Kearney on the road last Saturday 61-50.  It was their sixth win in a row. 

 

The Mid States Conference Basketball Tournament gets underway today with the girls bracket.  In games at Northeast Community College, 14-1 Boone Central faces 3-11 Madison at 6:15 with 10-4 Norfolk Catholic and 8-6 Wayne tangling afterwards at 7:45.  In games at Norfolk Catholic High School, 14-2 West Point Central Catholic meets 5-11 Battle Creek at 6:15 and 13-3 Hartington Cedar Catholic goes head to head with 8-6 Pierce at 7:45.  The tournament will continue with girls action on Thursday & Saturday.

News Briefs: 

 Repair of a gas pedal problem is still a way off for Toyota owners. Toyota told dealers today that they should get parts to fix sticky gas pedals later this week. But the 4.2 million customers affected by a large recall will have to wait until technicians are trained before repairs can begin.

 

An upper level weather system will track across the Northern Plains today and into the Upper Midwest tonight. This system will spread light snow across the Dakotas, northern and eastern Nebraska, Minnesota and northern Iowa today. An inch of snow is possible in the Norfolk area. The National Weather Service reports some freezing drizzle is also possible in parts of eastern Nebraska and Iowa late this morning and this afternoon.

 

The South Dakota Transportation Commission has awarded a $4.8 million contract to turn the Meridian Bridge at Yankton into a pedestrian and bicycling trail. PCiRoads of St. Michael, Minn., submitted the low bid. It was more than 10 percent below engineers' estimates. The double-deck bridge over the Missouri River is 85 years old and has been replaced by a new bridge. The contract also must be approved by Nebraska because the two states are sharing the costs.

 

It may have been cold outside, but the soup was on inside Sunday afternoon at the Divots Conference Center. Arts Center Assistant Director Chris Rempe says eight Norfolk area restaurants served their featured soups -- while about 20 artists had their work on display during the fundraising event called "Soup 'R Art." He says 50-percent of all art sales went back to the Arts Center. The crowd voted the Tuscan Bruschetta from the Times Square Event Center as the best soup. Karl Reeder was voted best artist while and he and his wife, Brenda, had the Best Booth.

 

Some of the region's best young musicians performed over the weekend at Wayne State College. 350 middle, junior and high school students from 75 schools in Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa were selected by audition for the day-long Festival of Honor Bands event. The day culminated with concerts by the Middle school band, a symphonic band and wind ensemble.

 

Miss Nebraska Brittany Jeffers did get into the top 10, but that was it for her at the Miss America pageant this past weekend. Jeffers is a news reporter for a Lincoln television station Miss Virginia, Caressa Cameron, won the crown.
