News Briefs:

Nebraska education leaders are asking lawmakers to keep in-state tuition for some illegal immigrants. The leaders in a letter to the Legislature's Education Committee say repealing the law would deny children economic, intellectual, and social benefits that serve both them and the state. A bill would repeal the 2006 law.

State senators Thursday killed a measure that would have required political parties to report campaign expenditures before elections just as so-called independent committees do. The mostly party-line vote followed a debate over whether there is partisanship in the officially nonpartisan Legislature.

A prisoner transport Thursday was anything but routine for a Winnebago Police officer. A 15-year-old being taken to the Northeast Nebraska Youth Detention Center in Madison became violent and disruptive. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says the boy was able to break out a passenger window Thursday morning just east of Pilger on Highway 275. The officer called for assistance and two patrol units from the Stanton County Sheriff's office responded. Unger says the teenager was physically removed from the patrol unit, subdued and restrained for a trip back to Winnebago. Charges are pending.

Enrollment in the diesel technology program at Northeast Community College in Norfolk remains strong. Vice President for Educational Services at Northeast, John Blaylock, tells WJAG NEWS the job market is also strong for the program's graduates.

This winter's snow storms have provided an opportunity for landowners. They are able to easily see where a shelterbelt would lessen the need for snow removal, save energy and protect livestock. District Forester Steve Rasmussen urges landowners to take advantage of professional services available to properly design a shelterbelt from agencies like the NRCS and NRD.

Governor Dave Heineman was in Norfolk Thursday to recognize a state employee who has logged more than 4 million steps in a state wellness program. Renee Tichota was honored at a ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Norfolk Veteran's Home for her accomplishment in the "Walk This Way" program. Tichota has walked the equivalent of 15 trips from Norfolk to Lincoln.
