Wayne State Women's Rugby Team Repeats as National Champions
WAYNE - Even an EF-4 tornado couldn’t stand in the way of a repeat national championship for the Wayne State women’s rugby team. Coach Darrin Barner says it wasn’t easy to outfit his team for the November 23rd and 24th Final Four competition in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The team wore unmatched uniforms and some borrowed equipment as about $50,000 worth of equipment and storage facilities were lost when the tornado struck on October 4th. The Wayne State women defeated Millersville College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 23rd in the semi-finals, and Smith College of Massachusetts in Sunday’s championship match. Barner says the team’s focus is now on fundraising to replace about $50,000 worth of equipment and storage facilities lost in the October 4th tornado. Anyone who would like to contribute to the team’s effort is asked to e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Wayne State College Foundation office.
