Water Sustainability Task Force to Ask for More Funding

LINCOLN - A state senator acknowledges a plan to fund projects to ensure Nebraska continues to have abundant water will have a tough time passing in the State Legislature.  Sen. Tom Carlson of Holdrege, a Republican gubernatorial candidate and chairman of the Legislature's Natural Resources Committee, says the first step to winning approval is driving home the importance of water.  The task force recommends raising $50 million annually by lifting the sales tax exemption on soft drinks and ethanol, and designating a portion of the state sales tax toward water projects.  The money would fund proposed long-term projects for irrigation, drinking water, flood control, wildlife and even interstate water compacts.
