Voters Reject Restaurant; Bar Tax

KEARNEY (AP) - Kearney voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to levy a 2 percent tax on bar and restaurant sales. The vote ratio on Tuesday was more than 2-to-1 against the tax: about 1,300 in favor and nearly 2,700 against. Turnout was about 24 percent. The measure would have been used for community betterment projects, such as parks. Some restaurant owners had argued that the tax would have forced them to either raise prices to cover the tax or pay the tax themselves.
