Tax Modernization Committee to meet for first time Wednesday
NORFOLK - Nebraska's Tax Modernization Committee will meet for the first time Wednesday. Its job is to redesign the state's tax system and recommend changes to make it work more efficiently. Nebraska hasn’t overhauled its tax policies since the 1960s. .The first meeting will focus what should be taxed and what should remain or be added to the list of exemptions. Renee Frye, a spokesperson for the non-partisan OpenSky Policy Institute, says changes are needed. She says Nebraska’s economy is primarily service-based while back in the '60s the economy was based on goods. The committee is expected to schedule several public hearings across the state yet this summer.
