Sports News-September 6, 2013

Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

Peyton Manning became the first NFL quarterback in 44 years to throw seven touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos won the NFL season opener last night, routing the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens 49-27.  The Broncos erased a three-point halftime deficit by scoring 28 unanswered points to open the second half as Manning passed for 462 yards and tied the NFL record for most TD passes.

If Bo Pelini is worried about his defense, he isn't showing it.  While fans of 22nd ranked Nebraska spent the week stressing over how easily Wyoming moved the ball in the opener, the Cornhuskers' coach stayed positive.  He said he expects the defense to be "significantly better" Saturday against 0-1 Southern Mississippi.  The 1-0 Huskers need to improve if they hope to hang with 18th ranked UCLA next week in what should be their toughest game before November.  The Huskers defeated Wyoming 37-34 last week, but the Cowboys amassed 602 yards.  No one expected the defense to be dominant early this season.  The unit is young, with a redshirt freshman and sophomore among the starting front four and four true freshmen playing a significant amount against Wyoming.

The Creighton men's basketball team finalized its 2013-14 schedule with yesterday's announcement of its first BIG EAST Conference slate.  The Bluejays will play each of its nine new league foes twice each as part of the conference's double round-robin format.  Creighton's first game in its new league will see them host defending BIG EAST CO-champion Marquette on Dec. 31.  It will be the 77th meeting between the schools, but first since a 1998 meeting in the NIT.  The Bluejays' first BIG EAST road trip will take the team to Seton Hall for a Jan. 4 contest before staying on the road until visiting Chicago for a Jan. 7 game at DePaul.  Creighton returns four starters from a team that went 28-8 last season and swept MVC regular-season and tournament titles in 2012-13.

The Wayne State women's soccer team fell at Northwest Missouri State 8-1 yesterday in the 2013 season opener for both teams played at the Bearcat Pitch in Maryville, Missouri.  Senior forward Macy Hagen scored the lone goal for WSC while freshman Kelsey Engstrom was credited with an assist on the score.  Wayne State will be at home on Sunday afternoon entertaining Washburn in a 2:00 contest that will be played at Cunningham Field on the Wayne State College campus instead of the WSC Soccer Complex.

The Northeast Hawks men's golf team competed at yesterday's Des Moines Area Community College Invitational at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, Iowa.  The host team was the team champion with a score of 281.  They won by 13 strokes.  Northeast finished sixth with a 316, which is their lowest competitive round they have shot since the program was reinstated.  The Hawks' 'B' squad shot 323 to tie for seventh.  The host team's Tanner Ludwig was the medalist with a 69.  He won by three strokes.  Dustin Vinson representing the 'B' squad tied for twelfth with a 74.

The Norfolk Panthers competed in the Papillion La Vista South Invitational yesterday.  In the boys competition, the host team was the team champion with a score of 39.  Lincoln Southwest was second with 45 and Norfolk took third with a mark of 103.  Omaha Gross' Nick Larsen was the champion in 16:43.77.  He won the race by a little less than five seconds.  The Panthers' TeJai Clausen was 16th, Andrew Meuret got 17th, and Austin Warren finished 19th.  The Norfolk boys JV finished fourth in their race led by Noah Beardslee's 19th place finish.  In the girls race, Lincoln Southwest was the team champion with a score of 26.  They won by 18 points.  The Lady Panthers finished with a score of 117.  Anna Hurlbut of Lincoln Southwest was the champion in 19:58.85.  She won by a little more than 38 seconds.  Norfolk's Abby Protzman finished 17th to lead her team.  The Norfolk girls JV finished third in their race led by Allison Finn's tenth place finish.

The Norfolk Catholic & Lutheran High Northeast cross country teams participated in yesterday's Wisner/Pilger Invitational at Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer.  In the Boys Class 'B & C' competition, Madison was the team champion with a score of 28.  They won by three points.  Norfolk Catholic finished fourth with 47.  Ferhan Barento of South Sioux City was the champion in 18:29.  He won by 15 seconds.  The Knights' Cameron Carney finished fourth, teammate Matthew Wieser was sixth, and Zach Ruppert got 14th.  In the Girls Class 'B & C' race, Wayne was the team champion with a score of 17 while Norfolk Catholic was second with a mark of 31.  Marta Pulfer of Wayne was the champion in 22:16.2.  She won by four-tenth of a second over teammate Cassie Heier.  The Lady Knights' Joelle Heng finished third.  Teammate Jennifer Blank was seventh, Nicole Aschoff got eighth, and Alex Anderson was 14th.  Brainard/East Butler won the Boys Class 'D' race by eleven points with Aaron Haahr of Laurel/Concord/Coleridge winning the race by 25 seconds.  Lutheran High Northeast's Ryan Bodlak finished 20th.  Oakland/Craig won the Class 'D' girls race by 17 points.  Sadie Petersen of Laurel/Concord/Coleridge won the race by five seconds.  The Lady Eagles' Sora Wolff finished eighth.
