%reldate(2012-09-21T09:30:00
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Eli Manning didn't need a big comeback last night, not with backup running back Andre Brown running for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns in the New York Giants' 36-7 rout of the Carolina Panthers. Brown got the start in place of Ahmad Bradshaw, who sat out with a neck injury.
UNDATED (AP) -The Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds both clinched playoff berths with victories yesterday. The Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 while the Nationals, the first team representing Washington to make baseball's postseason since the 1933 Senators, qualified with a 4-1 win over the L.A. Dodgers.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - In a low-scoring tussle on the blue rug at Boise State, the 24th-ranked Broncos nipped BYU 7-6. Boise State's only touchdown came on a 36-yard interception return by lineman Michael Atkinson, who picked off one of three BYU interceptions.
ATLANTA (AP) - Tiger Woods and Englishman Justin Rose start second round play at the Tour Championship tied at the top after yesterday's 4-under 66. Scott Piercy, Steve Stricker, Matt Kuchar and Bo Van Pelt are tied one shot back.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech's basketball team is going in a new direction after coach Billy Gillispie resigned due to health concerns yesterday. That ends Gillispie's disappointing one-year run at the program he took over with designs on building a West Texas powerhouse. Instead, the Red Raiders finished 8-23 in Gillispie's only season.
Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini has announced that defensive tackle Chase Rome has returned to the team and will be available to play Saturday against Idaho State. Rome left the team last week after starting the first two games. Pelini said yesterday that Rome has been practicing all week. The sophomore from Missouri, didn't play much in the second half of the Cornhuskers' 36-30 loss at UCLA. Pelini said last week that Rome's "personal goals and personal perception of where he should be on this football team doesn't match the team goals." Rome had four tackles in the first two games.
The Omaha Nighthawks minor league football team released its roster yesterday. Among the players listed are five former Nebraska football players in center Mike Caputo, linebackers Phillip Dillard and Steve Octavien, wide receiver Brandon Kinnie and defensive end Jay Moore. The Nighthawks open the United Football League season Sept. 28 at Sacramento. Their first game is Oct. 3 against Las Vegas. The team will open training camp Friday. It will run through Sunday.
