Yunel Escobar was suspended for three games yesterday by the Toronto Blue Jays for wearing eye-black displaying a homophobic slur written in Spanish during last Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox.  Pictures posted online showed the Blue Jays shortstop with the message written in his eye-black, a sticker players wear under their eyes to reduce glare from the sun.  The slur did not appear to be directed at any person in particular.

Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner was jailed on charges of drunken driving just hours after he scored a touchdown in the team's 27-21 win over the Denver Broncos.  Turner was booked into the Gwinnett County jail in metro Atlanta just after 5:00 on Tuesday morning.  Jail records show that he spent barely two hours behind bars before he was released on $2,179 bond.  A police spokesman said that Turner was clocked going 97 mph, 32 mph over the speed limit.

Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini has announced that linebacker Zaire Anderson is out for the season because of a right knee injury.  Anderson said yesterday that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in practice last week but didn't know it at the time.  He played with the injury while making his first start in the Cornhuskers' 42-13 win over Arkansas State.  Anderson, a transfer from a California Community College, backed up senior Alonzo Whaley at weakside linebacker the first two games.  The junior made three tackles against Arkansas State.  Either freshman David Santos or Whaley will take over Anderson's spot in Saturday's game against Idaho State.  Pelini said Anderson might apply for a medical redshirt to save a season of eligibility.

Nebraska baseball coach Darin Erstad announced yesterday the dates and times for the Huskers’ annual Red-White Series at Hawks Field.  The three-game series will begin on Oct. 9 at 3:30.  Game two will take place on Oct. 10 at 3:30.  The final game of the series will be a night game at Hawks Field on Oct. 11 at 6:00.  The Red squad will be looking for redemption after being swept by the White squad last fall.  The Huskers have already announced their 54-game schedule and open play on Feb. 15 at CSU Bakersfield.

Lincoln will have an indoor football team next spring when the Council Bluffs Express becomes the Lincoln Haymakers.  The team's owners said yesterday that the Lincoln team will be part of the new Champions Professional Indoor Football League.  The team's majority owner is Ho-Chunk Inc., the Winnebago tribe's economic development corporation. Justin Hayes and Brad Lindgren also own part of the team that will play in Lincoln's Pershing Auditorium.  The Lincoln Haymakers will hold an open try-out on Oct. 20, but the team has already signed two former Nebraska running backs Cory Ross and Marlon Lucky.  Ross will also serve as assistant director of player personnel and help with marketing.

Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner has filed for bankruptcy after trying to capitalize on his fame in numerous business and publicity pursuits over the years according to the Omaha World Herald.  Court records show Gardner owes creditors nearly $3 million on a household income of $37,392.  Gardner, who wrestled at Nebraska, disputes much of that debt, saying he’s being asked to pay off the balance of a loan co-signed by a real-estate partner and lost $400,000 in the deal.  “I got involved in a Ponzi scheme with a lady serving time in federal prison,” Gardner said yesterday.  Gardner will offer his version in a deposition scheduled for Oct. 10, bankruptcy trustee David L. Miller said.  Gardner’s Olympic gold medal was on a seizure list for the auction, but authorities couldn’t find it and Gardner told them it had been stolen, deputy Cache County Sheriff Brad Slater said yesterday.

Nebraska women’s basketball standouts Jordan Hooper and Lindsey Moore were both among 25 college players named to the 2012-13 preseason Wade Watch List, announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association yesterday.  Hooper and Moore become the first Husker teammates in history named to the Wade Watch list at the same time.  Hooper, a 6’2 junior forward from Alliance, Nebraska, earned honorable-mention AP All-America accolades as a sophomore after ranking among the nation's top-25 players in both scoring and rebounding.  She led the Huskers with 18.9 points per game, while leading the Big Ten Conference with 9.3 rebounds per contest.  Moore, a 5’9 senior point guard from Washington, earned her first appearance on the Wade Watch List this fall.  Moore joined Hooper on last year's Naismith Midseason 32 and was one of eight finalists for the 2012 Nancy Lieberman Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top point guard.  Moore, a 2012 second-team All-Big Ten choice, ranked second in the Big Ten in assists, fifth in steals, and seventh in scoring, while leading the Huskers to the 2012 Big Ten Tournament championship game in their inaugural season in the conference.

The Wayne State volleyball team held a 15-4 edge in blocks and forced Augustana College into 37 attack errors as the 21st-ranked Wildcats held off a Viking rally for a 3-2 Northern Sun Conference win in Sioux Falls, South Dakota last night.  Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25 and 15-13.  WSC is now 8-3 overall and 2-1 in league play while dropping Augustana to 7-4 and 1-2 in the NSIC.  Junior outside hitter Cori Hobbs notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 17 digs to lead the Wildcats.  Freshman outside hitter Lauren Sieckmann followed with 13 kills and eleven digs for her fourth double-double of the year.  Melanie Placke also recorded double digit kills with ten for the Wildcats.  Redshirt freshman libero Courtney VanGroningen was credited with a team-high 24 digs with Katie Hughes adding 19 while Leisa McClintock handed out 45 set assists to go along with ten digs.

The Northeast Hawks men’s golf team participated in the final day of the Indian Hills Community College Invitational at the Ottumwa, Iowa Country Club yesterday.  In the two-day event, the host school was the team champion with an 874.  They won by 13 strokes.  Northeast finished last with a 1051.  Jimmy Jaskoske of Iowa Western was the medalist with a 213.  He won by one stroke.  Northeast was led by Nathan Meister’s 253.  He shot an 82 yesterday.
