The Green Bay Packers got touchdown passes from their quarterback and their punter in a 23-10 win over the Chicago Bears last night at Lambeau Field.  Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of his 32 passes for 219 yards, including a 26-yard scoring throw to Donald Driver to make it 23-3 with 11:17 remaining.  Punter Tim Masthay turned a fake field goal into a 27-yard TD to Tom Crabtree.  Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler completed just 11 of 27 passes for 127 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions while being sacked seven times.  Packer linebacker Clay Matthews finished with 3 ½ sacks and teammate Tramon Williams picked up two passes as Green Bay rebounded from Sunday's loss to San Francisco.  Both teams are now 1-1.

Jim Calhoun has retired as men's basketball coach at Connecticut.  In 26 years he led the school to three national championships.  The 70-year-old Hall of Famer made the announcement yesterday.  He is being replaced by assistant coach Kevin Ollie, a former player for Calhoun.  Calhoun will take a transition appointment through next spring as a special assistant to the athletic director.  When he is fully retired, Calhoun will become head coach emeritus.  Calhoun has been slowed by health problems in recent years including a fractured hip last month.

Nebraska is paying Arkansas State $1 million for playing at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.  It’s the highest amount ever guaranteed to an opponent for a game in Lincoln.  Athletic director Tom Osborne said in an email to The Associated Press on yesterday that $1 million is the "going rate for a great many teams to play an away game with no return engagement."   Osborne said Arkansas State is a "decent program" and an "attractive matchup."  He said he probably could have scheduled a lesser opponent for less money, but he wants to maintain a "reasonably strong schedule."  Nebraska paid Southern Mississippi $300,000 for the Sept. 1 game, but the Huskers will play an away game against the Golden Eagles next year.  Idaho State will earn $600,000 for visiting next week.

The Norfolk Catholic & Lutheran High Northeast cross country teams participated at yesterday’s Columbus Scotus Invitational.  In the boys race, the host team was the champion with a score of 30 while Boone Central/Newman Grove was second with 37.  The Knights placed fifth with a score of 98.  Individually, Calvin Coizol of Boone Central/Newman Grove was the champion in 16:56.  He won by 1:34.  Norfolk Catholic’s Jared Maguire finished third while teammate Matthew Wieser was seventh.  In the girls race, Columbus Scotus won the title with a mark of 37 while Boone Central/Newman Grove was second with a score of 49.  The Lady Knights finished fourth with 75.  Individually, Columbus Scotus’ Morgan Benesch was the champion in 15:13.83.  She won by a little more than a second.  Norfolk Catholic’s Joelle Heng finished ninth.

The Norfolk High boys tennis team competed at yesterday’s Millard North Invite.  The Panthers finished seventh out of eight teams.  Millard North was the champion with 47 points.  They won by six points.  Norfolk totaled 12 points.  Mitch Dudley went 1-3 in #1 Singles, Jonathan Ingram recorded a 1-3 record in #2 Singles, Keaton Kreikemeier & Nick Collins went 1-3 in #1 Doubles, and Landon Marotz & Alex Busskohl had a 1-3 record in #2 Doubles.
