It wasn't pretty, it rained much of the second half and it might be best remembered for a near brawl at the end of the game.  But when tempers cooled, the New England Patriots are 2-0 on the young NFL season.  Tom Brady threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Dobson on the game's first series and the Pats held off the New York Jets 13-10 despite managing just nine first downs and 234 yards total offense.  The 1-1 Jets cut the lead to 13-10 on Bilal Powell's three-yard touchdown run with 5:05 left in the third quarter.  But rookie QB Geno Smith threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, two to Aqib Talib and one to Alfonzo Dennard.  The Pats played without wide receiver Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed the game because of injuries.

The twelfth ranked Nebraska volleyball team overcame a slow start last night to prevail over the Saint Mary's Gaels.  Scores of the match had the Huskers winning 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.  Two players had double-doubles for Nebraska on the night as Amber Rolfzen posted a career-high 16 kills and added eleven digs, while Kelsey Robinson had a season-high 19 kills and chipped in a match-high 17 digs.  The Huskers hit .243 as a team, while Saint Mary's hit .182.  N-U was paced offensively by Mary Pollmiller as she recorded a season-high 46 assists.  Justine Wong-Orantes followed Robinson's lead defensive with 16 digs.  Cecilia Hall led Nebraska at the net with five blocks, as they went on to out-blocked Saint Mary's 11-9.  The Huskers improve to 5-1 while the Gaels are now 3-2.

The Omaha Storm Chasers baseball team is just one win away from a second Pacific Coast League title in three seasons.  They beat Salt Lake 3-2 and 2-1 on Wednesday in Games One & Two of the series.  The Storm Chasers won the American Northern Division by a single game over Memphis and then swept Oklahoma City 3-0 in the American Conference Series.  The Bees claimed the Pacific Northern Division by two games over Tacoma and then beat Las Vegas 3-1 in the Pacific Conference Series.  Salt Lake went 78-66 while Omaha finished 70-74.  The two teams split four games this season. Games three and a possible four & five will be played today-Sunday in Salt Lake City, Utah.  First pitch tonight is at 7:35.

The Norfolk High football team improved to 3-0 on the season after routing Fremont at home last night 42-17.  According to the Norfolk Daily News, Panther quarterback Gunner Fuelberth, who started in place of an injured Taylor Reedy, threw for 270 yards off 19-26 passing and two touchdowns.  Fuelberth also ran for a score.  Running back Hayden Johnson ran for 167 yards off 28 carries and three touchdowns.  Jacob Hjorth caught ten passes for 160 yards and two scores.  Norfolk led 21-7 at halftime.  Fremont drops to 1-2.

Norfolk High has named Sean Wetterberg head baseball coach for the school.  Prior to coming to Norfolk High, he served one year as assistant coach for Papillion LaVista High School and was an assistant coach for the Papillion LaVista summer team.  Wetterberg played for the Panthers from 2005-2008, where he won a Varsity Letter and Academic All-State in 2007 and 2008. He graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 2008 and went to UNL where he graduated in 2013.  Wetterberg is currently teaching Science at NHS.  He is the son of Larry Wetterberg, who was coach of the Panthers from 2003-2009 and the summer team coach for eleven years.  Sean Wetterberg takes over for Kris Luellman, who coached from 2010-2013.  Last year, Norfolk finished 5-15.

The Norfolk High girls golf team participated in yesterday's Lincoln Classic at Mahoney Golf Course.  Kearney was the team champion with a playoff-hole win over Lincoln North Star.  Both teams shot a 375.  Norfolk finished seventh with a 406.  Individually, Nia Station of Omaha Burke was the medalist with a 79.  She won by three strokes.  Norfolk was led by Sami Bruening's 94.  She placed tenth.
