The United States men's soccer team can begin preparations for its seventh consecutive World Cup appearance.  The Americans got in with a 2-0 shutout over Mexico and Panama's 2-2 tie with Honduras.  Eddie Johnson broke the ice for the United States by scoring on a header in the 49th minute following Landon Donovan's corner kick.  Donovan capped the scoring in the 78th minute, giving the Americans their fourth straight 2-0 win over Mexico in Columbus.  The Yanks lead the North and Central American and Caribbean finals at 5-2-1 for 16 points, one ahead of Costa Rica.  The Unites States took over the group lead with Costa Rica's 1-1 tie at last-place Jamaica.

Detroit Lions star Ndamukong Suh has been fined $100,000 by the NFL for his illegal low block in the season-opening victory over the Minnesota Vikings last weekend.  NFL spokesman Randall Liu says vice president of football operations Merton Hanks notified the Detroit defensive tackle of the fine.  Suh hit Vikings center John Sullivan during an interception return, drawing a penalty that negated a touchdown by Detroit linebacker DeAndre Levy.  The former Nebraska Cornhusker said he wasn't going after Sullivan's knees, adding that the two discussed the play at halftime.  Detroit players said Suh apologized to the team yesterday.  The NFL fined Suh $30,000 last year for unnecessary roughness when he kicked Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin area.  He was suspended two games in 2011 after stomping on Green Bay's Evan Dietrich-Smith.

Oklahoma State boosters and assistant coaches reportedly handed out tens of thousands of dollars to players for at least a decade as the program grew into a national power.  That's according to Sports Illustrated, which quotes several former players by name and says some of them received $2,000 to $10,000 annually, with a few stars receiving $25,000 or more.  Eight players told the magazine they received cash, while 29 others were named by teammates as taking money.

Nebraska has announced a football game against Troy University to be played in Lincoln in five years.  The Trojans will come to Memorial Stadium on Sept. 15, 2018, marking the fifth time Troy has visited.  Nebraska and Troy previously met in Lincoln four times between 2001 and 2006, with the Huskers winning each game.  Troy has opened the 2013 season with a 2-0 record and has been one of the top programs in the Sun Belt Conference since making the transition to the FBS ranks in 2002.  Troy won conference championships five straight seasons from 2006-10, including outright titles in 2008-09.  The matchup between Nebraska and Troy is the second scheduled game on the Huskers' 2018 non-conference schedule. Nebraska plays Colorado the week before.

The Omaha Storm Chasers/Salt Lake Bees title series opener was suspended by rain yesterday in Omaha.  The game was tied at 1-1 in the second inning before the game was suspended after a 2:35 rain delay.  The opening game of the best-of-five Pacific Coast League Championship series will resume today at 1:00 and then play the regularly scheduled Game Two at 7:05.  The Storm Chasers won the American Northern Division by a single game over Memphis and then swept Oklahoma City 3-0 in the American Conference Series.  The Bees claimed the Pacific Northern Division by two games over Tacoma and then beat Las Vegas 3-1 in the Pacific Conference Series.  Salt Lake went 78-66 while Omaha finished 70-74.  The two teams split four games this season.

The Creighton men's soccer team is the top squad in the nation according to the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released yesterday, following a 3-1 victory over Columbia last weekend.  It marks the Jays' first time back in the top spot since September 1999.  Creighton has ranked as high as second in each of the past three seasons, including last week's poll position.  North Carolina is ranked second.  The Bluejays travel to Norfolk, Virginia, this weekend to take part in the Stihl Classic hosted by Old Dominion.  They face the host Monarchs on Friday at 6:00.

The top ranked in both polls in Class 'C-2' Lutheran High Northeast volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the season last night after beating Norfolk Catholic in four sets at the Clayton & Vivian Andrew Activities Center.  Scores of the match had the Lady Eagles winning 24-26, 25-18, 29-27, 25-12.  Lutheran High Northeast's Morgan Sunderman banged out 17 kills and had five solo blocks in the win.  Teammate Megan Gebhardt added 21 set assists & ten digs.  Sarah Meyer had 20 set assists and five ace serves.  Kelsey Sunderman & Hannah Knapp collected eleven digs each.  The Lady Knights' Kristin Maguire had twelve kills and ten digs.  Teammate Nicole Ramaekers added ten kills and three blocks.  Morgan Molacek totaled 20 set assists and four ace serves.  Norfolk Catholic drops to 2-4.  The Lady Eagles lead the head-to-head matchup 8-4 since 1998.

The Norfolk High girls golf team participated in yesterday's Columbus triangular at the Elks Country Club.  Fremont was the champion with a 191, Columbus placed second with a 193, and the Lady Panthers were third with a 207.  Columbus' Samantha Beal was the medalist with a 39, winning by five strokes.  Norfolk's Sami Bruening led her team with a 46.

The Norfolk Catholic girls golf squad won yesterday's Hartington Cedar Catholic triangular at the Hartington Golf Course.  The Lady Knights carded a 225, Pierce shot a 244, and the host team put up a 258.  Norfolk Catholic's Ashlynn Pospisil & Hartington Cedar Catholic's Lexi Schommer tied for medalist honors with a 47.
