The Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 to move into the American League Championship Series.  Shane Victorino singled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, and Xander Bogaerts scored twice.  Koji Uehara wrapped up a combined six-hitter by picking up a four-out save, one night after giving up a walkoff homer that extended the division series to a fourth game

The Detroit Tigers have forced a fifth and deciding game in their American League Division Series by rallying from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 to beat the Oakland Athletics 8-6.  Jhonny Peralta hit a three-run homer and Victor Martinez added a solo shot before Austin Jackson singled home the go-ahead run.  Omar Infante added a two-run double to make it 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth, a half-inning after reliever Max Scherzer pitched in and out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam.

Atlanta Falcons Pro Bowl receiver Julio Jones will go for a second opinion on his injured foot amid concerns he could miss the rest of the season.  Coach Mike Smith says the initial report on Jones' foot was not encouraging.  Jones injured the foot during last night's 30-28 loss to the New York Jets, which dropped the Falcons to 1-4 and four games behind first-place New Orleans in the NFC South.

The Creighton men's soccer team stands at number seven in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released yesterday following a split last week.  The Jays ended last week with their third-straight shutout of a BIG EAST opponent in three opportunities, blanking Xavier 2-0.  Creighton dropped its second match of the year on Wednesday at Saint Louis, 1-0.  Creighton continues its conference slate this weekend when it visits BIG EAST foe Marquette.  The Jays and Golden Eagles will play at 7:00 on Saturday in Milwaukee.

The Nebraska Board of Pardons has granted a hearing to consider a full pardon for Nebraska football great Johnny Rodgers.  Rodgers is seeking a full pardon for a 1970 gas station robbery.  The 62-year-old Heisman Trophy winner says the crime has been hanging over him since his 1971 conviction.  He was given two years of probation.  The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Rodgers did not appear before the Pardons Board on Tuesday.  The board, made up of Gov. Dave Heineman, Attorney General Jon Bruning and Secretary of State John Gale, set Rodgers' hearing for Nov. 14, when Rodgers will make his case.  Rodgers' pardon application came with letters of support from former Nebraska football coach and athletic director Tom Osborne and former Omaha mayor and congressman Hal Daub.
