Clayton Kershaw turned in a masterful pitching performance in hurling the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-1 win over Atlanta in the opener of that National League Division Series.  Kershaw dominated the Braves for seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out twelve, and Adrian Gonzalez delivered a two-run home run.

The St. Louis Cardinals enjoyed a 9-1 laugher in taking the opener from Pittsburgh in their National League Division Series.  Adam Wainwright, a 19-game winner in the regular season, pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out nine while Carlos Beltran sparked a seven-run third inning with a three-run homer.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. will make his second straight start in place of the injured Taylor Martinez when Nebraska hosts Illinois in its Big Ten opener Saturday.  Coach Bo Pelini said after Thursday's practice that Martinez hasn't progressed enough in his recovery from an injury to his left big toe.  Armstrong, a redshirt freshman, and fifth-year senior Ron Kellogg III split playing time evenly in the Cornhuskers' 59-20 win over South Dakota State on Sept. 21.  The Huskers didn't have a game last week.  Martinez continues to battle turf toe, an injury marked by painful bruising at the base of the toe.  Turf toe can become chronic if not allowed to fully heal.  Martinez hasn't played or practiced since the Sept. 14 game against UCLA.

The season is rapidly approaching for the Northeast Community College men's basketball team.  The team began official practices last Tuesday.  This weekend, the Hawks will test their skills against other teams in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Northeast will be one of 24 teams participating in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference 2013 Juco Jam on Saturday.  Teams from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin will play in the event at the University of Northern Iowa's Wellness and Recreation Center.  Each of the 24 teams will play three games on Saturday.  The Hawks will take on Carl Sandburg College of Illinois at 1:00; Kishwaukee Community College of Illinois at 3:00; and John Wood Community College of Illinois at 5:00.  Northeast will take part in three preseason scrimmages later this month.  They will open the regular men's basketball season at the two-day McCook Classic beginning Friday, November 1 as the team will take on North Platte Community College at 6:00. The Hawks first men's basketball home contest will be Wednesday, November 6 against North Dakota State College of Science at 8:00.  Northeast finished 16-15 last season.

The Norfolk High football team will return to Lincoln on Saturday at 11:00 to resume their suspended game with Lincoln Southeast from Thursday night.  The Panthers were leading the Knights 20-9 with 1:08 left in the third quarter before a thunderstorm rolled into Lincoln.  Norfolk quarterback Gunner Fuelberth had a touchdown run & pass before sustaining a shoulder injury in the third quarter.   Backup quarterback Chase Hopper threw a touchdown pass before the game was suspended.  Wide receiver Jacob Hjorth caught both touchdown passes.  He set the state record for Class 'A' receptions in a career with his first reception of the night for seven yards.  He now 114 receptions, breaking former Panther Elliot Koerting's 110.  Norfolk safety Brock Juracek has two interceptions.  The Panthers are currently 4-1 while Lincoln Southeast is 2-3.
