Sports News-October 25, 2013

Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

The St. Louis Cardinals have evened the World Series at a game apiece by putting together a three-run seventh to beat the Red Sox 4-2 in Boston.  The Red Sox led 2-1 on a two-run homer by David Ortiz in the sixth inning before the Redbirds scored twice on a sacrifice fly, thanks to fielding miscues by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and pitcher Craig Breslow.  Winning pitcher Michael Wacha allowed just three hits in six innings, and Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth on eleven pitches to wrap up the victory.  Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran was back in the starting lineup and delivered an RBI single last night.  He was injured while robbing Ortiz of a grand slam in the second inning of the opener on Wednesday.  Beltran came out of that game an inning later and was examined at a hospital, where X-rays and a CT scan were negative.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars remain the NFL's only winless teams after Cam Newton threw for 221 yards and ran for a team-high 50 in Carolina's 31-13 win over the Bucs.  Newton threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Panthers won for the fourth time in five games since an 0-2 start.

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez probably will play against Minnesota on Saturday, but whether he starts will be a game-time decision.  Coach Bo Pelini said yesterday that Martinez's availability will be determined by how his injured left foot responds to a week's worth of practice.  Martinez has missed three straight games for the BCS 24th ranked Cornhuskers because of turf toe.  Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. started in Martinez's place.  The main concern is whether Martinez can fully plant his foot when he runs outside the pocket. Pelini said Martinez seemed to get better at that throughout the week.

The Class 'C-1' Three-Time Defending State Champion Norfolk Catholic football team rebounded from last week's loss to Pierce with a 57-6 rout of Wayne at Norfolk's Veterans Memorial Field.  Jackson Love ran for 122 yards off 25 carries and two touchdowns while the Knights built a 24-6 lead at halftime.  David Engelhaupt ran for two scores and caught another.  Quarterback Zach Pospisil threw two touchdown passes.  Seven players in all had a hand in a score for Norfolk Catholic.  They totaled 384 yards of offense while the Blue Devils mustered only 111.  The Knights forced four Wayne turnovers.  The Blue Devils' Trevor Pecena was in on 17 tackles in the loss.  Norfolk Catholic improves to 6-2 while Wayne drops to 5-4.

The Lutheran High Northeast football team was dealt their first loss of the year.  The Omaha World Herald seventh ranked in Class 'C-2' Battle Creek Braves rolled the second ranked Eagles 41-3 in Battle Creek last night.  The Norfolk Daily News reports that the Braves' Nate Gray ran for 154 yards off 25 carries and a touchdown last night in the win.  Zach Bellar scampered for 113 yards off just three carries.  He ran for two touchdowns and threw for another.  Five players had a hand in a score for Battle Creek as they built a 28-3 lead at halftime.  They rushed for 387 yards as a team and totaled 403 yards of offense.  Lutheran High Northeast mustered only 161 yards.  Shaka Taylor led the Eagles with 74 rushing yards off 22 carries.  The Braves improve to 8-0 while Lutheran High Northeast falls to 7-1.
