The Pittsburgh Pirates are heading to St. Louis to play the Cardinals in the best-of-five National League Division Series starting Thursday.  Russell Martin homered twice and Marlon Byrd also went deep to support Francisco Liriano, who pitched seven strong innings in the Pirates' 6-2 win over Cincinnati in the wild-card playoff.

The NFL Players Association wants to determine if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers leaked information about quarterback Josh Freeman being in the NFL's substance abuse program.  NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said yesterday, "We are sufficiently concerned about what we've heard to begin an investigation."  Freeman said in a statement released by his agent late Monday that he voluntarily entered the substance-abuse program and submitted to random testing more than a year ago after mistakenly taking Ridalin instead of Adderall to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  The Bucs benched the fifth-year pro last week after Freeman played poorly in the team's first three games, all losses.  The quarterback believes someone within the Bucs organization leaked information about him being in the league's drug testing program.

Army, Navy and Air Force might be forced to skip their football games this weekend because of the partial government shutdown.  The Defense Department temporarily suspended sports competition at the service academies yesterday as a result of the budget impasse in Congress.

The Creighton men's soccer dropped one spot to fourth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released yesterday, following a pair of ties by the Bluejays last week.  The draws against Michigan State and Georgetown extended the Jays' program-record of consecutive double-overtime matches to five.  Creighton visits non-conference foe Saint Louis in a match slated for 7:00 on Wednesday.

The Nebraska women's soccer team debuted at 23rd in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division I poll released yesterday.  This designation marks the team's first appearance in the Top 25 since 2005.  The Huskers are currently on a six-game win streak for the first time since 2004 en route to an 8-2-1 record, already besting last year's win total of seven.  NU is also 3-0-0 in the Big Ten Conference and tied atop the standings with seventh ranked Penn State.  Nebraska will play host to Iowa on Thursday at 4:00.

Creighton University has announced that guard Carli Tritz has decided to give up basketball because of lingering knee problems.  Tritz was the Missouri Valley Conference preseason player of the year last season, but problems with her right knee limited her and she finished with an average of 6.8 points a game.  The Sioux City native had been the second-leading scorer in the Valley as a freshman in 2010-11 was a first-team all-conference pick as a sophomore after scoring 15 points a game.  Creighton joins the Big East Conference this season.  The Bluejays were 25-8 and won a game in the NCAA tournament last season.

Doane College junior defensive specialist Karissa Blank has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for her efforts this past week on the court.  The former Lutheran High Northeast standout helped the Tigers to a 2-0 week with wins over Morningside and Mount Marty.  Blank averaged 3.0 digs per set and had a serve reception percentage of .940.  She also added five ace serves in the two matches.  Blank currently ranks 42nd in the NAIA in ace serves this season with 30.

The Norfolk Catholic girls golf team participated in yesterday's Mid States Conference Meet at Crofton.  Boone Central was the team champion with a score of 388.  They won by 31 strokes.  The Lady Knights finished sixth with a 475.  Boone Central's Melissa Kyncl shot an 83 to take medalist honors.  She won by eleven strokes.  Norfolk Catholic's Ashlynn Pospisil led her team with a third place finish.  She carded a 96.
