Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

The Boston Red Sox have a 2-1 lead in the American League Championship Series after John Lackey pitched into the seventh and Mike Napoli homered in a 1-0 win over the Tigers in Detroit.  Lackey held the Tigers to four hits while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings, but he needed Napoli's seventh-inning blast in order to pick up the win.  Napoli's home run came off Justin Verlander, who allowed just three other hits while fanning ten in eight innings.

Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer and pinch-hitter Shane Robinson added a solo shot as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Dodgers 4-2 in Los Angeles to take a 3-1 lead in the National League Championship Series.  Holliday had been 0-12 in the series and hitless in his previous 22 at-bats at Dodger Stadium before his homer put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 in the third inning.  Winning pitcher Lance Lynn allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings to help the Cardinals get within one victory of their fourth World Series appearance in ten seasons.

The United States did Mexico a favor yesterday while killing Panama's shot at a berth in next year's World Cup.  Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson scored in second-half stoppage time to give the Americans a 3-2 win over Panama.  The U.S. rallied after Panama went ahead 2-1 in the 64th minute.  Panama would have clinched a berth in the World Cup with a victory.  Mexico will play New Zealand for a spot the World Cup despite losing 2-1 at Costa Rica.

The twelfth ranked Creighton men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback in a non-conference match against Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan last night.  The Bluejays drop to 6-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the BIG EAST.  They dropped five spots earlier in the day to twelfth in the NSCAA rankings.

The Nebraska football team has lost its top offensive lineman, most likely for the rest of the year.  Coach Bo Pelini said yesterday that Spencer Long will have surgery Thursday on his left knee.  Long was hurt on the Huskers' fifth play from scrimmage in Saturday's 44-7 win at Purdue.  He was an Outland Trophy candidate after making first-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-American in 2012.  Pelini says it looks like Long is gone for the year, "but the prognosis going forward's a little bit better."

The Girls State Golf Championships are in the books.  In the Class 'A' competition at the Norfolk Country Club, Grand Island was the team champion with a 360.  They won by eleven strokes.  Miranda Keeler of Bellevue East was the medalist shooting an 80.  She won by five strokes.  Norfolk High's Samantha Bruening carded a 99.  The event was a one-day competition after being canceled due to rain on Monday.  In Class 'B' at Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln, Scottsbluff was the team champion with a 705.  They won by ten strokes.  Megan Vetrovsky of McCook was the medalist shooting a 164.  She won by four strokes.  In the Class 'C' competition at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus, Minden won a three-team playoff with Columbus Scotus & Grand Island Central Catholic.  All three teams shot 406.  O'Neill finished fourth with a 417.  Wayne carded a 430, Boone Central shot 433, Pierce put up a 439, and West Point-Beemer finished with a 448.  Auburn's Hannah Brown shot an 80 to win medalist honors.  Columbus Scotus' Amy Price tied for third with a 91, West Point-Beemer's Lacie Fox & Columbus Lakeview's Kelsey Bignell shot 93 to tie for fifth place, and Norfolk Catholic's Ashlen Pospisil tied for eleventh with a 96.  The event was a one-day competition after being canceled due to rain on Monday.

The Omaha World Herald has updated its high school softball rankings.  Papillion La Vista remains first in the 'Nebraska Top 10' & Class 'A' while Omaha Skutt is once again first in Class 'B'.  In Class 'C', Bishop Neumann stays at number one, West Point Guardian Angels moves up from sixth to third, Wayne falls from third to sixth, Twin River slips from fifth to seventh, and O'Neill enters the rankings at number ten.
