     OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Detroit Tigers rode a dominating pitching performance from Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander to the American League Championship Series. Verlander hurled a four-hitter and fanned 11 for his seventh complete game this year in the Tigers' 6-0 Game 5 clinching victory over Oakland last night.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) - New York ace CC Sabathia goes for the Yankees today in their decisive fifth game of their AL Division Series against Baltimore, which will start Jason Hammel today. J.J. Hardy's RBI double in the 13th inning drove in the go-ahead run in the Orioles' 2-1 win over the Yankees last night to tie the series.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP)- Jayson Werth saved the Washington Nationals season with a line drive homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Nats a 2-1 win over St. Louis and force a decisive Game 5 tonight in the Nation's Capital. The Nats hand the ball to 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez against the Cards' Adam Wainwright.
 
     CINCINNATI (AP) - The Washington-St. Louis winner will be playing San Francisco in the NL Championship Series. The Giants became the first NL team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the division series after beating Cincinnati 6-4 with Buster Posey's  grand slam climaxing a six-run fifth inning.
 
     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Titans handed the Pittsburgh Steelers their third road loss of the season, 26-23 last night. Rob Bironas kicked his fourth field goal, a 40-yarder as time expired.

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced yesterday that junior college transfer Mike Peltz of Alliance has been added to the 2012-13 roster for the start of practice on Oct. 12.  Peltz is a walk-on who has two years of eligibility remaining after spending the last two seasons at Western Nebraska Community College.  A two-year captain, he averaged 7.5 points, 6.2 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game in helping Western Nebraska to a 26-7 record and the school's first national ranking since 2005.

The Norfolk Catholic volleyball team has run their win streak to 18.  The Lady Knights improved to 22-1 on the season with a three-set win over home team O’Neill last night.  Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-9, 25-14.  NC’s Lynne Borgmann had ten kills and 14 digs while teammate Michaela Barry recorded 15 set assists, six kills, and four aces.  The Lady Knights are ranked third in both polls in Class “C-1”.  They will be in action next when they host top ranked in Class “D-1” 20-1 West Point Guardian Angels on Tuesday at 7:45.

The Norfolk High boys tennis team’s season has come to conclusion at the State Championships in Omaha yesterday.  Norfolk’s Mitch Dudley went 1-1 on the day in #1 Singles.  He beat Lincoln Northeast’s Allen Treichel 6-3, 6-3 and then lost to Lincoln Southeast’s Matt Strasburger 6-0, 6-0.  The Panthers’ Jonathan Ingram went 1-1 in #2 Singles.  He defeated Lincoln Northeast’s Chase Egger 6-2, 6-4 and then lost to Lincoln Southeast’s Bobby Curry 6-1, 6-2.  Norfolk’s Nick Collins & Keaton Kreikemeier lost in the opening round of #1 Doubles to Lincoln North Star’s Trevor Reimnitz & Michael Coffey 6-1, 6-4.  The Panthers’ Landon Marotz & Alex Busskohl were beaten by Lincoln North Star’s Matthew Coffey & Josh Nguyen in #2 Doubles 7-5, 6-3.

The Norfolk High boys & girls cross country teams has qualified for the State Championship next week after yesterday’s A-2 District Meet at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.  In the boys race, the host team won the race with 16 points while Norfolk placed second with a score of 69.  Timothy Smith of Kearney was the champion in 16:45.5.  He won by just over four seconds.  The Panthers’ Ben Protzman finished fifth, teammate Zach Hoffie placed tenth, and TeJai Clausen got twelfth.  Also qualifying on the Norfolk team were Andrew Meuret, Austin Warren, Ryan Hoffie, & Derek Johnson.  In the girls event, Kearney was the team champion with a score of 23.  Lincoln Southwest totaled 49 to place second and Norfolk was third with 89.  Kearney’s Megan Sughroue was the individual champion in a time of 15:33.3.  She won by nearly 14 seconds.  The Lady Panthers’ Abby Protzman finished sixth and teammate Erika Kumm was tenth.  Also qualifying on the Norfolk team were Jordan Copple, Stacie Skaff, Sara Reyes, Pollyanna Carlson, and Brittany Albin.

The Norfolk Catholic cross country teams took part in yesterday’s C-3 District Meet at the Albion Country Club.  In the boys race, Boone Central/Newman Grove won the team title with a score of 49 while Columbus Scotus finished second with a mark of 55.  Norfolk Catholic was seventh with a score of 103.  Individually, Boone Central/Newman Grove’s Calvin Koziol was the champion in 16:21.  He won by 13 seconds.  Norfolk Catholic’s Jared Maguire qualified for the State Championship next week by finishing fifth.  In the girls race, Columbus Scotus was the team champion with a score of 32, West Point-Beemer was second with a mark of 49, and Boone Central/Newman Grove placed third with 53.  The Norfolk Catholic girls did not qualify by placing fourth with 64 points.  Individually, Columbus Scotus’ Morgan Benesch was the champion in 15:13.  She won by 31 seconds.  Norfolk Catholic’s Joelle Heng & Nicole Aschoff finished eighth & ninth respectively to qualify for the State Championships.
