Sports News-October 11, 2013

Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

Justin Verlander worked eight outstanding innings and Miguel Cabrera belted a two-run homer as the Detroit Tigers downed the Athletics 3-0 in Oakland to advance to the American League Championship Series.  Verlander had a no-hitter until Yoenis Cespedes singled up the middle with two outs in the seventh.  Verlander allowed just one other hit while striking out ten to help the Tigers earn the right to play the Boston Red Sox.

Jay Cutler threw a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes to Brandon Marshall and the Chicago Bears ended a two-game skid by beating the New York Giants 27-21.  Tim Jennings had two of the Bears three interceptions of Eli Manning, turning the first into a 48-yard touchdown.  The Bears are 4-2 after dropping the Giants to 0-6, their worst start since 1976.

Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. will make his third straight start at quarterback in place of the injured Taylor Martinez when Nebraska visits Purdue on Saturday.  Coach Bo Pelini said Thursday night that Martinez had not recovered enough from a turf-toe injury on his left foot that has bothered him since mid-September.  Pelini said fifth-year senior Ron Kellogg III also would take some snaps against the Boilermakers.  Armstrong has led the Cornhuskers to wins over South Dakota State and Illinois, completing a combined 20 of 28 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns.  He hasn't committed a turnover.

A young boy with cancer whose touchdown run at the Nebraska spring football game touched millions of Internet viewers will be in St. Louis next month to present a sportsmanship award to the Cornhuskers football program.  The Musial Awards will be presented Nov. 9 at Peabody Opera House.  The awards, named after St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial, recognize sportsmanship moments and achievements from across the country.  The awards are produced by the St. Louis Sports Commission and the National Sportsmanship Foundation.  Eight-year-old Jack Hoffman's 69-yard TD sprint during an April intrasquad game has drawn more than eight million views on YouTube.  It won an ESPY award as the "Best Moment."  Jack Hoffman, from Atkinson, has brain cancer that his father says is now in remission.
