Shawn Eichorst is promising to immerse himself in the culture of the Cornhuskers as he prepares for his new job as Nebraska athletic director.  Eichorst said yesterday he planned to make few changes within the department, saying the programs were already on the right track under the leadership of retiring director Tom Osborne.  Eichorst left his job as athletic director at scandal-tainted Miami last week for a five-year contract to succeed Osborne.  The 75-year-old Osborne announced late last month that he will retire Jan. 1 after five years on the job.  Eichorst didn't apply, but was contacted in late August.  He met with Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman during the second weekend of September.  Eichorst has not yet had a chance to sit down with NU football coach Bo Pelini, but he plans to soon.  Eichorst declined to give his assessment of the state of the football program.  Pelini was not present at the press conference.

The Creighton men's soccer team held its spot at 24th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll yesterday, after home victories over Loyola-Chicago and Southern Illinois Edwardsville last week.  The Jays also held steady at fourth in the NSCAA Midwest Regional Rankings.  Creighton is ranked 17th by Soccer Times, and 19th by College Soccer News & TopDrawer Soccer.  Soccer America kept the Jays out of its rankings for the second straight week.  The team won their match last night beating Princeton on the road 3-2 in overtime.  Creighton is now 8-3-2 overall.

A former Husker football player spent the night in jail Monday after Lincoln police arrested him on suspicion of domestic assault.  According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Jermarcus "Yoshi" Hardrick, 22, pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor in court yesterday and posted a $2,500 percentage bond.  Officer Katie Flood said police arrested him shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday for what started with a verbal argument between Hardrick and a 20-year-old woman, who was throwing his property out a second floor window.  She told police Hardrick grabbed her by the back of the neck and threw her across the room, leaving her with two scrapes on her back.  The native of Batesville, Miss., was part of the Husker program during the past two seasons, starting all 13 games at left tackle on the offensive line in 2011.

The Wayne State men’s golf team shot rounds of 335 and 357 Monday and yesterday during the first segment of the 2012-13 Northern Sun Conference Golf Championships played at The Classic at Madden’s in Brainerd, Minnesota.  The Wildcats’ 36-hole team score of 692 puts them in twelfth place after the fall portion with the spring portion of the tournament scheduled to be played next April at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minnesota.  St. Cloud State is the team leader after the opening 36 holes with a team score of 624, eight strokes better than second place Sioux Falls.  Wayne State’s top individual player was O’Neill sophomore Blake Bauer shooting scores of 79 and 85 for a 164 total that is tied for 25th overall out of 60 players.  Wayne State will conclude the 2012 fall schedule on Sunday and Monday playing in the Missouri Western Invitational at St. Joseph, Missouri.
