Sports News-November 5, 2013

Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of last night's 27-20 loss to the Chicago Bears with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.  As a result, the Packers fell into a three-way tie for the top spot in the NFC North with Detroit and the Bears at 5-4.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he had no exact diagnosis of Rodgers' injury.  He said the quarterback will be re-examined today to determine the extent of the injury.  Rodgers was hurt when he was sacked from behind by Bears defensive end Shea McClellin after scrambling on the Packers opening drive.  The injury was to his left shoulder.  Rodgers hasn't missed a game because of injury since Dec. 19, 2010, when he had a concussion.  Backup Seneca Wallace took over for Rodgers, but the Green Bay offense wasn't the same.  That ends the Packers' four-game winning streak and their six-game streak against the Bears, who hadn't won at Lambeau Field since 2011.  Chicago backup Josh McCown had a big night, completing 22 of 41 for 272 yards and no interceptions.  His favorite receiver was Brandon Marshall, who had seven catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.  Matt Forte ran for 125 yards and another score.

The troubled saga between Miami Dolphins teammates Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin took an ominous turn yesterday.  Two people spoke to The Associated Press with fresh revelations that the suspended Incognito sent text messages to his teammate that were racist and threatening.  Martin left the team last week because of emotional issues.

Creighton forward Doug McDermott has been named a Preseason All-American by the Associated Press for the second straight season.  McDermott, the lone returning First Team All-American from last season, averaged 23.2 points and 7.7 rebounds last season to lead Creighton to a 28-8 season a year ago.  He led the country with 284 field goals and 834 points while also shooting a school-record 49% from three-point range.  Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, Louisville's Russ Smith, Michigan's Mitch McGary and Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins were all named to the First Team.

The Nebraska volleyball team remains eleventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll after beating Illinois 3-0 and Northwestern 3-2 last week.  The 17-4 Huskers return to action this week when they visit Wisconsin and Minnesota on Friday & Sunday respectively.  Texas remains first followed by Penn State, Washington, USC, and Florida.

Nebraska backup quarterback Ron Kellogg III is still overwhelmed, two days after his desperation pass landed in Jordan Westerkamp's hands with no time left to beat Northwestern.  Congratulatory tweets came from, among others, actress-model Gabrielle Union and comedian Larry the Cable Guy.  He and Westerkamp were stars of the weekend highlight shows.  Kellogg says he still can't believe the Hail Mary worked.  He said his big opportunity showed that a player who walks on can have his number called at any time.  Kellogg will be back on the sideline at the start of this week's game at Michigan.  Pelini already has said Tommy Armstrong Jr. will start, unless Taylor Martinez is somehow able to play.  Pelini said Kellogg has never complained about his role.  In a related note, Westerkamp has been named freshman of the week in the Big Ten.

The Wayne State volleyball team remained 18th in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released yesterday.  The 19-7 Wildcats won a pair of road matches over the weekend, beating Minnesota Crookston 3-1 and Bemidji State 3-0.  The Wildcats will play their final two home matches of the season this weekend, hosting 20th ranked Northern State Friday evening at 7:00 and MSU Moorhead Saturday at 4:00.  In other Wayne State volleyball news, Alyssa Frauendorfer was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week.  It's the first time the 6'0 former Humphrey High standout has earned the honor.

The Lutheran High Northeast volleyball team's season is up in the air.  They will find out at the end of the week if they will receive a wildcard to enter the Class 'C-2' State Tournament after last night's loss.  The Lady Eagles dropped a five set semifinal match to Stanton at yesterday's Class 'C-2-5' Tournament at Norfolk High.  Scores of the match had the Lady Mustangs winning 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8.  Lutheran High Northeast's Megan Gebhardt had 15 kills, 26 set assists, three ace serves, and seven digs in a losing effort.  Morgan Sunderman added 16 kills and six solo blocks.  Hannah Knapp had six ace serves and Samantha Wolff contributed eleven digs.  The Lady Eagles are now 23-9 on the season.  Stanton will now face Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in the final this evening at 7:00.  Battle Creek clipped Clarkson/Leigh in five sets in the opening match and then dropped their semifinal to Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family in three.
