Jimmy Howard stopped 38 shots and the Detroit Red Wings grabbed a 2-1 lead in the NHL's Western Conference semifinals by beating the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-1.  Howard was perfect until Patrick Kane scored with 15:25 left to get the Hawks within 2-1.  The game was scoreless until Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart in the second period.

The Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers will meet again in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals starting Wednesday.  Frank Vogel said yesterday that he has great respect for LeBron James and the Miami Heat, but as for James' perception that the Indiana Pacers coach considers Miami "just another team," Vogel said the Heat superstar is mistaken.  “Sorry, sports world, the words 'just another team' never came out of my mouth.  Great respect for LBJ and the champs.  Looking forward to a great series," Vogel said yesterday, according to  On Saturday night, after the Pacers won their series against the New York Knicks in six games, Vogel referred to the Heat as "the next team in our way.  And that's how we're approaching it."

In their final season as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the Creighton baseball team had four players earn All-MVC Recognition.  Jake Peter & Alex Staehely were named to the All-MVC Second Team while Peter was also named to the All-Defensive Team.  Federico Castagnini & Tommy Strunc were named Honorable Mention.  The third seeded Bluejays open the MVC Tournament against sixth seed Indiana State today at 9:00 AM.  Creighton is 30-16 overall and 13-8 in the conference while the Sycamores are 24-23 overall and 9-11 in the conference.

Nebraska-Omaha senior outfielder Ryan Keele was named Summit League CO-Player of the Week and freshman pitcher Tyler Fox was named Summit League CO-Pitcher of the Week for their performances May 13-19. The honors mark the final weekly awards of the 2013 season.  Keele captured his third straight weekly accolade and fourth this season after helping the Mavericks clinch its first Summit League regular season title and initial Division I conference championship in any sport.  For the week, Keele batted .429 with seven RBI, five runs scored, two stolen bases, a home run and a double.  North Dakota State's John Skrbec joined Keele as CO-Player of the Week.  Fox picked up his first career Pitcher of the Week honor after throwing seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over South Dakota State.  The freshman was credited with the win, which helped clinched Omaha's first Summit League regular season title.  Fox surrendered just three Jackrabbit hits, all singles, and had five strikeouts.  North Dakota State's Jake Heck joined Fox as CO-Pitcher of the Week.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team has landed a recruit from Kansas.  According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Kaylee Page has accepted a scholarship from the Huskers.  The 6’2 Player of the Year averaged 21 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and three assists a game for the state champion Wamego Raiders last year.  Page, who will join Nebraska this fall, hopes to play guard.

Creighton rising junior Eric Miller was one of 22 players selected to play for the United States Under-20 National Soccer Team by head coach Tab Ramos for the 2013 Toulon Tournament from May 28-June 8 in Toulon, France.  This is the fifth time Miller has earned an opportunity to play for the U.S. National Team internationally.  Miller started 19 matches for the Bluejays in 2012, logging 1,596 minutes.  He collected three points on one goal and one assist this season.  The U.S. opens the tournament against France on Tuesday, May 28 in Toulon.

The Wayne State women’s outdoor track and field team collected two awards yesterday from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as junior Carly Fehringer was named the Central Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year while assistant coach Brett Suckstorf was honored as the Central Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year from the coaches’ association.  Fehringer, a junior from Wayne, recorded the fifth-best throw all-time and the second best mark in the hammer throw this spring with a throw of 206’ 11”.  She also set a new NSIC meet record and was conference champion in the hammer throw at 203’ 6” and was fourth at the Drake Relays in the hammer with a mark of 202’ 10” in a field that consisted of mainly Division I competitors.  Suckstorf is in his third season with the Wildcat program and led the WSC throwers to eight national qualifying spots, including three automatic marks, for this weekend’s Division II National Championships.  He guided four qualifiers in the hammer throw, and two each in the discus and shot put.

The NSAA State Golf Championships get underway at various sites.  Class “A” will hold their competition at Pioneers Golf Course in Lincoln.  Class “B” will commence at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course in Grand Island.  Class “C” will compete at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.  Class “D” will hold their competition at Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney.  Norfolk High will be represented by Tyler Lewis, Ross Gerber, Alex Strom, Travis Baker, & Devan Maas in Class “A”.  Norfolk Catholic’s Riley Knake & Lutheran High Northeast’s Payton Baker will also be participating in the Class “C” Competition.  73 golfers from the Northeast Nebraska area will be involved.
