Heat gain 2-1 edge over Thunder...Simpson rallies to win first
major
MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Heat have taken a 2-1 series lead in the
NBA Finals by beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 91-85 last night.
LeBron James led the way with 29 points and 14 rebounds for the
Heat, who have the next two games on their home court on Tuesday
and Thursday nights.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Webb Simpson closed with a pair of 2-under
68s on the weekend to win the U.S. Open by one shot over Graeme
McDowell and Michael Thompson. It's the first major title for
Simpson, whose previous best finish in a major was a tie for 14th
in last year's U.S. Open.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - For two rounds, Tiger Woods seemed to be in
command in the U.S. Open. Then came a weekend of frustration that
ran his winless streak in major championships to four years as
Woods shot 75-73 on the weekend to finish six shots off the lead,
tied for 21st.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) - Dale Earnhardt Jr. has found Victory Lane
for his first Sprint Cup victory in four years, ending a 143-race
winless streak Sunday at Michigan International Speedway. Earnhardt
beat Tony Stewart to the checkered flag to win again at Michigan,
the same track where he previously won on June 15, 2008.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The New York Yankees are on their longest
winning streak in more than three years. The Yanks finished a
three-game sweep in Washington by beating the Nationals 4-1 for the
Yanks' ninth straight win behind home runs by Curtis Granderson and
Robinson Cano.

Florida State eliminated Stony Brook 12-2 in an elimination game at the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.  Justin Gonzalez and Devon Travis homered to help the Seminoles build an early 9-0 lead against the CWS first-timers from Long Island.  In the nightcap, Arizona blanked UCLA 4-0.  Konner Wade pitched a five-hit shutout.  Arizona pitchers have allowed just one earned run in the last 21 innings.  Games today have Kent State battling Florida in an elimination game at 4:00 and South Carolina meets Arkansas at 8:00.

The Nebraska football team has added two commits according to the Omaha World Herald.  Husker coaches welcomed almost 20 top targets to campus over the weekend, ending the two-day event with commitments from athlete Nathan Gerry of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and long snapper Gabriel Miller of Indiana.  Nebraska entered the weekend hoping to land a commitment from Gerry.  The 6’2, 206-pounder is projected as a safety.  Last season Gerry finished with 73 tackles, three interceptions and two sacks for Washington High.  Gerry is rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports and held offers from several Big Ten schools, including Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota and others.  Miller accepted yesterday, giving N-U its twelfth commitment in the 2013 recruiting class.

Norfolk Catholic football coach Jeff Bellar has been honored by the Omaha World Herald as the High School Boys Coach of the Year for 2012.  Bellar led his football team to their second title in a row last fall with a 20-6 Class “C-1” Championship win over Platteview.  The Knights were undefeated last season with a 13-0 record and have won 26 games in a row dating back to September 2, 2010.  Bellar is currently sixth all time in wins in football in Nebraska with 289 wins.
