Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, the Detroit Tigers' Prince Fielder and a player to be named will be the American League team in the Home Run Derby next Monday night during All-Star festivities at Citi Field. New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz has signed a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season. The deal with worth $43 million according to media reports. Cruz was a restricted free agent with three years in the NFL. Last month, he signed a one-year, $2.879 million tender with the Giants, but a long-term deal was already in the works. The Giants could have matched any offers Cruz received from other teams, so he didn't get any. Cruz skipped all of New York's offseason program. He was an undrafted free agent out of Massachusetts, but he's become one of the most productive receivers in the NFL. Over the last two seasons, he has 168 receptions for 1,628 yards and 19 touchdowns.
The Los Angeles Lakers are moving ahead in the wake of free agent center Dwight Howard's agreement to sign with the Houston Rockets. The Lakers signed 31-year-old Chris Kaman, who had some of his best seasons in Los Angeles with the Clippers, to a one-year deal worth a reported $3.2 million.
More details could be released soon about the murder investigation involving former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez. A judge is expected to unseal search warrants this afternoon. Impoundment of the material was challenged by news organizations, and their motion was granted yesterday. Prosecutors and defense attorneys have argued for keeping the material sealed. District Attorney Samuel Sutter said he won't appeal the judge's ruling. It wasn't immediately clear if defense attorneys would. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the June 17 fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd, whose body was found in an industrial area near Hernandez's North Attleborough home. Two other men face lesser charges. Carlos Ortiz is due in court today to determine if he could get bail on a gun charge.
Nebraska senior quarterback Taylor Martinez and junior running back Ameer Abdullah have been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award. Martinez and Abdullah are among eight Big Ten players on the watch list and Nebraska is one of 17 schools with two or more players named to the Maxwell Award watch list. The award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. The 6'1, 210-pound Martinez has already shattered several Nebraska records in his first three seasons as starting quarterback. He has established NU records for career and season total offense, career passing yards and ranks second among quarterbacks in career rushing yards. Abdullah teamed with Martinez in 2012 to give Nebraska pair of 1,000-yard rushers. Abdullah rushed for 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore and helped Nebraska lead the Big Ten and rank eighth nationally in rushing offense. Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled Nov. 18. The winner of the 2013 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12.
