A judge has cleared the way for the $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer by ruling against team owner Donald Sterling's attempt to block the transaction. Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas sided with Sterling's estranged wife Shelly Sterling, who burst into tears when the ruling was announced.  Shelly Sterling negotiated the sale of the team after the 80-year-old billionaire was banned by the NBA for making offensive remarks about blacks.

Washington, D.C., attorney Michele Roberts has been voted in as the new executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, making her the first woman to head up a major North American sports union.  At the close of a chaotic Monday filled with meetings, conference calls, presentations and an array of emotions, NBPA executive committee members and team player representatives cast 32 votes in favor of Roberts as the successor to the ousted Billy Hunter, six more than she needed for election.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin withdrew last week from Team USA training camp for the FIBA World Cup because he was advised by doctors to give a small fracture in his back more time to heal before the start of the next NBA season, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.  Griffin is expected to make a full recovery from the injury, which sources say was suffered during the playoffs.  However, doctors advised him to sit out international competition this summer for precautionary reasons.  Griffin has continued to work out this summer in Los Angeles.  Both Griffin and Minnesota forward Kevin Love withdrew from the training camp last week, which left Team USA thin in the front court and prompted the late addition of Atlanta's Paul Millsap to the camp.

A media panel has selected running back Ameer Abdullah and defensive end Randy Gregory of Nebraska to the Big Ten Players to Watch list for this season.  The list of ten players, five each from the East and West divisions, was announced yesterday before the conference's football media day in Chicago.  Abdullah ran for almost 1,700 yards last season and is the top returning rusher in the Big Ten.  Gregory led the conference with 10 ½ sacks in 2013.  Both are on watch lists for several national awards this year.

The Detroit Lions are postponing contract talks with All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh until after the season.  Suh, a former standout Nebraska Cornhusker, is entering the final season of his contract, and team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew said before practice yesterday that negotiations are being tabled. Lewand and Mayhew both expressed optimism that a deal can eventually be reached.  Lewand said Detroit's salary-cap situation isn't the reason for the delay in an agreement.  If the two sides can't reach a deal after the season, the Lions could still keep Suh by using their franchise tag on him.  The Lions selected Suh with the second overall pick in 2010, and he has 27 ½ sacks in his four pro seasons.
