Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension. A person familiar with the situation says Ryan's extension is for $103.75 million, with $59 million guaranteed. The 28-year old Ryan is entering the sixth and final season of his original rookie contract and will earn a $10 million salary.
The Alex Rodriguez-New York Yankees soap opera was a five-part miniseries yesterday, culminating in A-Rod again declaring he was ready to play now but since he is just "an employee", that he would accept the Yankees' plan to have him start a rehab assignment Aug. 1 according to ESPN. If all goes according to plan with the quad and if he is not suspended by baseball in the interim, A-Rod could return to the Yankees soon after Aug. 1. Rodriguez told WFAN radio in New York on Thursday evening that he chose to do a five-day rehab, which could put him back in the lineup by Aug. 6 against the White Sox. The three-time American League MVP, who turns 38 Saturday, has been sidelined since hip surgery in January.
Authorities say several surveillance photos recorded hours before, and minutes after, his friend was shot to death show former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez holding a gun. The photos, taken from Hernandez's home surveillance system, are the public's first look at images apparently showing Hernandez holding a gun before and after the killing. They are in more than 100 pages of court records released yesterday by Attleboro District Court. Prosecutors previously described the photos in court and in affidavits. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old Boston semi-pro football player whose body was found June 17 in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's home. Hernandez associate Ernest Wallace is scheduled to appear in court today.
The Chicago Cubs pulled Alfonso Soriano from the lineup before yesterday's 3-1 loss to Arizona and manager Dale Sveum says a trade to send the outfielder to the New York Yankees is about "99 percent done." Soriano is hitting .254 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs. He is a seven-time All-Star and made his major league debut with the Yankees in 1999. The Yankees and Cubs would need to work out the financial aspects of Soriano's rich contract. New York is fourth in the American League East, trailing leader Boston by 6 ½ games, and desperate for power.
Kolton Houston's three-year struggle to regain NCAA eligibility is finally over. The Georgia offensive lineman passed his most recent NCAA drug screening, allowing him to join the Bulldogs' active roster for the first time in his college career according to ESPN. Houston first failed an NCAA random drug test shortly after enrolling at Georgia in 2010, causing college sports' governing body to rule him ineligible because of steroid use. What followed was a years-long battle between Georgia and the NCAA, a case that the University took public in August 2012.

Burlington comes into Saturday having already played five games. They are 2-3 after a 14-8 loss on July 13th to the Chicago Wolverines.
