Rory McIlroy went wire-to-wire in capturing his first British Open with a final-round 71 for a 17-under 271 finish, two shots ahead of Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. The 25-year-old McIlroy picked up the third leg of a career Grand Slam. If he wins the Masters next year, he would become just the sixth player to win all four of golf's majors.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are planning to sign top overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins to a contract in the coming week, according to sources close to the process, Sources told ESPN.com that the Cavaliers' delay in signing the former Kansas star has nothing to do with the prospect of Wiggins being dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of Cleveland's ongoing trade discussions for Kevin Love. The Cavaliers, sources say, are merely exploring options for using their estimated $1.4 million in remaining cap space before signing Wiggins to a contract that will pay him in the neighborhood of $5.5 million as a rookie.
The 106th Nebraska Amateur Championship begins today at the Norfolk Country Club. 147 entries were received and accepted including five past champions. 2013 champion, Andy Sajevic of Fremont, will be seeking his fourth Amateur crown. Rounds one and two take place today and tomorrow. A cut is then made to the low 60 scores and ties for the final two rounds played Wednesday and Thursday. Entries include Norfolk’s Broderick Baker, Payton Baker, Travis Baker, Ryan Brenden, Nick Kluver, Riley Knake, Lance Lawson, Lance Morrow, Alex Strom, Zach Sudbeck, and Shawn West. Also participating are West Point’s Steve Blocher, Homer’s Mitchell Holgate, O’Neill’s Kris Koelzer, Humphrey’s Trevor Kosch, Schuyler’s Clint Kracl, Laurel’s Mitchell Klooz, Wayne’s Joey Baldwin, Columbus’ Brady Vancura, Nathan Fuerhoff & Jon Misfeldt and Brunswick’s Riley Meuret & Sam Meuret.
The Norfolk Seniors baseball team’s season has come to an end. They dropped a 9-0 decision to Columbus yesterday in an elimination game of the A-6 Tournament in Norfolk. Peyton Price had three hits with two doubles. Grant Gilsdorf & Daniel Roche added two hits each. Mason Emry took the loss. The Norfolk squad had lost to Fremont 4-0 on Friday and then beat Grand Island U-Save 11-8 on Saturday. Their final record is 8-22.
American Legion Baseball Seniors Area Tournaments continue across the state. At the A-6 Tournament in Norfolk, Columbus plays Gretna in a 3:00 elimination game and Grand Island Home Federal takes on Fremont at 7:00. In other seniors area tournaments, regarding area teams, at the B-5 Tournament at Albion, Wakefield meets Columbus Lakeview in a 7:00 elimination game. At the C-1 Tournament at O’Neill, Valentine plays T-B-S in a 5:00 elimination game and Creighton meets Ainsworth at 8:00. At the C-2 Tournament at West Point, West Point battles Dodge/Scribner/Howells in a 7:00 elimination game. At the C-3 Tournament at Wisner, Crofton meets Tekemah/Herman in a 7:00 elimination game. At the Class ‘B’ Juniors State Tournament at Aurora, Waverly plays Minden/Kearney County in a 1:00 elimination game, Holdrege meets Blair in a 4:00 elimination game, and Beatrice faces Hickman at 7:00. At the Class ‘C’ Juniors State Tournament at Creighton, Battle Creek goes head to head with Palmer/Wolbach/Greeley/Spalding in a 2:00 elimination game, Crofton faces Malcolm in a 5:00 elimination game, and Louisville/Weeping Water takes on Creighton at 8:00.
