Sports News-December 6, 2013

Big Ten Live on the Big Ten Network weekdays from 5:00-6:00 PM & ESPN Radio at 105.9 WJAG-FM & 780 WJAG-AM Mon-Fri at 6:00 PM; Sat & Sun at 4:00!

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been cleared of any wrong doing in the case of the woman who alleged he had raped her in Dec. 2012.  State Attorney Willie Meggs said at a news conference in Tallahassee that there was not enough evidence to win a conviction.  Winston leads the nation's top-ranked team against Duke in the ACC championship game tomorrow.

Nebraska football fans will be able to begin buying bowl game tickets Monday morning.  The Huskers won't find out what bowl they will play in until Sunday evening, but this year will be the 50th bowl appearance for Nebraska all-time.  Only Texas and Alabama have more bowl appearances.  The Huskers finished the regular season with an 8-4 record in the Big Ten Conference.  They appear most likely to receive an invitation to play in either the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Arizona or the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida.  Both those bowl games have ties to the Big Ten.

Three Nebraska football seniors were named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team yesterday, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.  Offensive guard Spencer Long was a first-team selection, while tight end Jake Long and fullback C.J. Zimmerer were named to the second team.  The three academic All-America selections continues Nebraska's long tradition of academic honors.  Nebraska was the only school with three players on the Division I team, with six schools having two honorees each.  This marks the third straight year Nebraska has had multiple Academic All-Americans in football, boasting three in 2011 and two in 2012.  In Bo Pelini's six seasons as Nebraska head coach, the Huskers have had eleven first or second-team academic All-America picks.  The eleven academic All-Americans in the past six seasons is the second-most in the country in that time period, trailing only Penn State's 14 honorees in the same period.

The Creighton baseball team announced its 2014 schedule, featuring 29 home games and a stretch of 21 consecutive games in the state of Nebraska.  They open the season with 14 games away from home, beginning with a three-game set at Arkansas-Little Rock from Feb. 14-16.  The 2014 home schedule kicks off at TD Ameritrade Park as the Bluejays host South Dakota State in three-game set from March 14-16.  Creighton doesn't leave the state until April 17, a 21-game stretch.  They continue the I-80 rivalry with the first game between Nebraska and the Bluejays on March 18 at 6:30 at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.  Weather shortened the matchup to two games last year, which were split.  The two teams will also meet up on April 8 & 29 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.  Creighton will face off with its new BIG EAST brethren in the conference tournament from May 21-24.  The tournament will be played in Brooklyn, New York.

A Nebraska judge has extended New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard's probation to three years after he admitted drinking alcohol and driving last summer.  Lancaster County District Court Judge Stephanie Stacy yesterday could have revoked Dennard's probation and sent him to jail.  Stacy also ordered Dennard to serve 60 days in county jail starting March 1 and increased his community service hours.  The judge had placed the former Nebraska player on two years of probation and 30 days in jail for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest outside a Lincoln bar in 2012.  Dennard in September admitted he violated his probation when he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in Lincoln on July 11.  A hearing in that case is scheduled Friday.
