It's being seen as a sharp rebuke to Commissioner Roger Goodell's handling of the NFL's bounty investigation as former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue yesterday overturned the suspensions of four current and former New Orleans Saints players. Tagliabue found that three of the players engaged in conduct detrimental to the league, and says they participated in a performance pool that rewarded hard tackles and other plays that could merit fines. But he stressed that the team's coaches were very much involved and, along with others in the Saints' organization, had "contaminated" the case. Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma initially had been suspended the whole season, while Saints defensive end Will Smith, Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove received shorter suspensions.
Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 45 points, Jason Kidd made the tie breaking three-pointer with 24 seconds left, and the New York Knicks rallied from an early 17-point hole to beat the Brooklyn Nets 100-97 last night. Kidd finished with 18 points against his former team, who used to dominate the Knicks when he played in New Jersey. Now the series is tied at 1-1 since the Nets moved to Brooklyn, both games coming down to the tense final minutes. Andray Blatche scored 23 points in place of Brook Lopez, who missed his sixth straight game with a sprained right foot. Deron Williams added 18 points and ten assists, and Reggie Evans grabbed 18 rebounds, but the Nets lost their fifth straight.
Senior Koang Doluony has chosen to leave the Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team effective immediately, head coach Derrin Hansen announced yesterday. Doluony's decision was based on family reasons away from basketball. Doluony, a 6’8 forward, began his career at Indiana State and transferred to UNO for his final season of eligibility in 2012-13. He earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Indiana State in four years, graduating in August 2012.
More postseason honors were announced today for Wayne State senior punter Randy Weich as he was named to the 2012 Daktronics All-America Second Team. It’s the third All-American honor for Weich, who was named Monday AFCA All-American First Team punter and last week was named to the BSN Division II All-America Second Team. The Pierce native was named NSIC South Division First Team Punter for a third straight season after leading the NSIC in punting for a third straight year averaging 44.8 yards per punt. Wayne State finished the 2012 season with a 6-5 record.
The Wayne State women’s basketball team elevated three spots in the newest USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll released yesterday after they climbed from 15th to 12th. The Wildcats went 2-0 last weekend posting wins over University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. Wayne State will be on the road this weekend for a pair of NSIC matchups, traveling to Upper Iowa Friday evening and then invading Winona State on Saturday afternoon.
The top ranked in Class “C-2” Lutheran High Northeast boys basketball team improved to 5-0 last night with a win over top ranked in Class “C-1” Norfolk Catholic 54-46 at the Clayton & Vivian Andrews Activities Center. The Eagles’ Kenny Blank scored 14 points and collected four steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Teammate Ryan Freudenburg added twelve points. The Knights’ Dylan Borer had 17 points hitting four three-pointers along the way. Teammate Riley Knake recorded 16 points and tore down eight rebounds. Norfolk Catholic’s Connor Ketter sprained an ankle in the first quarter and did not return in the second half. Lutheran High Northeast led at halftime 25-18 and 34-33 after three quarters. The Knights fall to 3-2 on the season. The Eagles have won the last two matchups between the teams. Norfolk Catholic still holds a 9-5 edge in the rivalry.
