He was beaten in his own Olympic trials, but Usain Bolt came through when it really mattered. The world record holder captured his second straight gold medal in the 100-meters blazing to an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds. Bolt edged out fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake who settled for the silver medal. Blake beat Bolt in both the 100 and 200 meters at the Jamaican Olympic trials. The bronze medal went to 2004 Olympic champ Justin Gatlin of the United States.
Garrett Reid, the troubled 29-year-old son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead yesterday in a dorm room at the club's Lehigh University training camp, where he spends most of his summers with his father. Police said the death was not suspicious, and the cause was under investigation. The coach's oldest son had a long history of drug problems and went to prison for a heroin-fueled car crash.
Ben Kohles fired a nine-under-par 62 in the final round of the Cox Classic presented by Lexus of Omaha to win for the second straight week. The 22-year old came from two strokes off the pace at Champions Run and zipped past the field, finishing at 24-under par to win by three over South Africa's Dawie van der Walt, who settled for an eleven-under 60 when he missed a short birdie putt on the final hole. Kohles is in unchartered territory in becoming the first player in Tour history to make his first two professional starts victories, pretty impressive for a guy who didn't even try out for his high school golf team as a freshman. He collected $117,000 and moved to second on the money list to lock up a spot on the PGA TOUR for 2013. Kohles started the final round at 15-under, two back of CO-leaders Russell Henley and Luke Guthrie. Omaha’s Scott Gutschewski shot 14-under par while O’Neill John’s Hurley was eleven-under par.
Nebraska native Jeremy Scott is getting ready to compete for an Olympic medal in the pole vault this week. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Scott, who grew up in Norfolk believes he has a shot at a medal in the competition that starts Wednesday. Scott didn't even start pole vaulting until he was 16. The 31-year-old has spent nine years training with Bell Athletics in Jonesboro, Arkansas. That means he already knows several teammates because one of the other male pole vaulters and two women who are competing in the event also train with Earl Bell. Scott says his training has helped him go from clearing 15’2 in high school in 1999 to win the state tournament to clearing 19’1 ¼ in a recent meet.
The second three-day Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship gets underway today at the Pines Country Club in Valley. This year's competition, similar to last, will be comprised of 33 gross division golfers and 18 net golfers. Gross division players will compete in a stroke play qualifier today to determine the two flights and their 16 seeds for match play which begins tomorrow. The Net players will be pre-flighted and seeded for match play based on their USGA Handicap Index. They will then play net matches within their flights which will also offer consolation brackets for first round losers. Norfolk’s Rob Merrill is involved in the competition.
