Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed a season sweep at Pocono Raceway, the third win in a season that has served as a career renaissance for NASCAR’s most popular driver. His third win, he also won the Dayton 500, tied him for the most in Sprint Cup this season. Earnhardt held off the hard-charging Kevin Harvick to become the first driver to sweep both races at the track since Denny Hamlin in 2006.
Tiger Wood hurt his back during the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational yesterday and withdrew after hitting his tee shot on the ninth hole. Woods was in visible pain trying to pick up his teen and later at his car in the parking lot, where in brief remarks he said he “jarred it” when his jumped into a fairway bunker on the second hole after hitting a shot from an awkward stance. Rory McIlroy won yesterday’s event at Firestone. With another powerful performance, he wiped out a three-shot deficit to Sergio Garcia in three holes, closed with a 4-under 66 and returned to number one in the world with a two-shot victory in the Bridgestone Invitational.
A 14-year-old became the first golfer to win two city titles in the same year. Norfolk’s Luke Kluver won yesterday’s Men’s City Tournament at the Norfolk Country Club, adding to his Junior City title last Friday at Eldorado Hills Golf Course. The Norfolk Daily News reports that Kluver won a one-hole playoff over Matt Lenser of Norfolk after both posted 27-hole scores of 108. Casey Herbolsheimer and Travis Baker, who also posted 18-hole scores of 74, finished third and fourth, respectively. Other flight winners were Brad Bosh in the President Flight; Seth Brown in the Flight; Terry Beck in the Second Flight and Dennis Utecht in the Third Flight.
The Fourth Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship begins today at Grand Island's Riverside Golf Club. Gross division golfers will be flighted and seeded for match play based on an 18-hole stroke play qualifier today. A net flight was pre-flighted for match play based on USGA Handicap Index and features a consolation bracket. Past champions Mike Krumland of Columbus and Chris Mangan are entered. Columbus’ Mike Wiester is also involved.
