NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Ninth-ranked South Carolina opened a college football season with a scare, rallying past stubborn Vanderbilt 17-13. Marcus Lattimore ran for two TDs and 110 yards, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 11:25 left.

Eighteen home games and road trips to Las Vegas, Lincoln and Berkeley highlight Creighton’s men’s basketball schedule, announced yesterday by coach Greg McDermott.  In addition, they will play 18 Missouri Valley games and has been assigned a road contest on BracketBusters weekend.  Creighton finished last season with a 29-6 record and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jays return ten lettermen and four starters in search of a 16th straight postseason.  The regular season opens on Nov. 9, when the Bluejays welcome North Texas.  Creighton’s first true road game will be just an hour away, as in-state rival Nebraska hosts the Jays on Dec. 6.  Creighton will be seeking its first win in Lincoln since 2004 against new Husker head coach Tim Miles.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team learned its schedule for Big Ten Conference play today, as the conference office unveiled the 2012-13 schedule.  The Huskers' 18-game Big Ten slate will be rigorous, as the league led the nation in RPI in 2011-12 while sending nine teams to either the NCAA or NIT tournaments.  Nebraska, under first-year Coach Tim Miles, will be tested right out of the gate in conference action, as each of their first five Big Ten opponents played in the NCAA Tournament last season, including regular-season co-champions Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan.  The Huskers begin Big Ten play on the road in Columbus on Jan. 2 against an Ohio State team that won 31 games and reached the NCAA Final Four in 2011-12. Later in the week, N-U will open the home portion of the conference slate against Wisconsin for the second straight season on Sunday, Jan. 6, taking on a Badger squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16.

Justin Jackson has finally found his role in the Nebraska football program just as he begins his fifth year.  Coach Bo Pelini says Jackson is the front-runner for the starting center's job in Saturday's opener against Southern Mississippi.  A week earlier, the walk-on from Roca, Nebraska, was rewarded with a scholarship.  Jackson began his career as a defensive lineman but moved to offensive line in the spring of 2011.  He moved back to defense at mid-season last year because of injuries, then switched to center this past spring.  Jackson said he was never fazed by all the moves.  He said he just wanted to be put in a position where he'd have a chance to play.  Jackson says it would "mean the world" to him if he starts Saturday.

A pair of transfer student-athletes, Alex Phillips and Mike Rostampour, have joined the Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball program for the 2012-13 season, head coach Derrin Hansen announced yesterday.  Phillips is a 6’3 guard who played two years at New Mexico Junior College.  As a sophomore, he was named first-team all-conference and averaged 10.3 points per game.  Rostampour is a 6’8 forward, and joins the Mavericks after playing his sophomore season at St. Cloud State.  As a starter in 2011-12, he averaged eight points and five rebounds per game and led the Huskies by shooting 53% from three-point range.

Highlighted by fourteen home games and road trips to Cancun, Houston, Salt Lake City, the 2012-13 Creighton women's basketball schedule was announced today by head coach Jim Flanery.  Creighton finished last season with a 20-13 record, including victories in eight of their final ten contests.  The Bluejays return ten of the eleven active members of the roster last season, including four starters.  The Jays play 30 regular-season contests during the 2012-13 season, 14 in D.J. Sokol Arena and 16 games on the road.
