Steve Ballmer is officially the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.  The team says the sale of the franchise from the Sterling Family Trust has closed.  The transaction was completed after a California court confirmed the authority of Shelly Sterling, on behalf of the Family Trust, to sell the franchise.  Her husband, Donald Sterling, had unsuccessfully fought the sale of the team he owned since 1981 in court.  The NBA Board of Governors had previously approved the sale.

The Kansas City Royals' eight-game winning streak is over after Josh Donaldson went 3-4 with a pair of solo homers, four RBIs and three runs scored in Oakland's 11-3 romp at Kansas City.  Brandon Moss added four hits and two RBIs as the A's stayed 3 ½ games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West and kept the AL Central-leading Royals a half-game ahead of Detroit.  Jon Lester won for the third time in as many starts since joining the A's, striking out nine and allowing three runs in six innings.

The NBA will announce Wednesday that LeBron James will play his first game in Miami since returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas Day, according to sources briefed on the league's new schedule.  Sources told yesterday that the NBA's 2014-15 schedule, which will be released in full this evening at 5:00 in an NBA TV special, predictably sends James back to South Beach to face Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the rest of the Miami Heat on the marquee date of the league's regular-season calendar after James' decision last month to re-sign with his home-state Cavaliers.

Denver Broncos leading tackler Danny Trevathan is out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left knee during a particularly intense padded practice yesterday.  The Broncos said their weakside linebacker has what's called a medial tibial impaction fracture but, fortunately, no torn ligaments.  Trevathan, who didn't put any weight on his left leg after being carted off the field during team drills, is expected to return to the Broncos right around their bye week in late September, meaning he'd only miss three regular season games, at most.  He was hurt on an 1-11 run play in which center Will Montgomery rolled over him.

The Big Ten and ESPN announced yesterday the tip-off times and television information for the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  Nebraska’s game at Florida State on December 1, will tip off at 6:00 and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.  The Huskers’ game with the Seminoles is one of two games on the ESPN family of networks that evening, as Rutgers will take on Clemson on ESPNU with a 6:00 tip.

Wayne State is picked to finish fifth in the Preseason NSIC Volleyball Coaches Poll.  Sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Frauendorfer was listed as the Wildcat Player to Watch this season.  Wayne State returns four starters from last year’s team that was 22-10 overall and placed sixth in the NSIC with a 12-8 league mark in 2013, ending the season ranked 21st in the final AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.  Seven-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul was the unanimous selection to win the NSIC this season.  Wayne State is scheduled to open the 2014 season on September 5th in the Oredigger Volleyball Classic in Golden, Colorado facing Bentley of Massachusetts in a 2:00 contest.
