Michael Phelps is master of the medals.  The swimming sensation has set the Olympic record for most medals won, helping the United States to the gold medal in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay.  That brings his medal haul to 19, including a record 15 gold.  Phelps broke the record held by a former Russian gymnast Larrisa Latynina.  Earlier, Phelps tied the mark when he was edged out for gold by South Africa Chad le Clos in the 200-meter butterfly.

It's two routs in two outings for the NBA star-laden United States basketball team.  Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love scored 16 points apiece and Kevin Durant added 13 in the Americans' 110-63 victory over Tunisia.  Team USA turned a close game into a blowout with a spectacular second half.  The Americans led by only 13 points at halftime, but outscored Tunisia 39-14 in the third period on the way to its second straight easy win.  AP college player of the year Anthony Davis scored twelve points.  Ten of his points came on dunks.  Russell Westbrook added eleven for the Americans, who will face 1-1 Nigeria on Thursday night.

Star tailback Silas Redd is bolting Penn State for Southern California.  The 1200-yard rusher opted yesterday to leave a Nittany Lions program facing stiff sanctions handed down by the NCAA in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.  Among the penalties was a four-year postseason ban.  The NCAA gave Penn State players the option to transfer immediately and play for another school this year.  Redd visited USC over the weekend and heard coach Lane Kiffin's pitch to be a key cog for a Trojans team expected to be highly ranked and contend for the Pac-12 title.  Redd is the second player to leave Penn State since the sanctions were announced July 23.

Penn State football fans are rallying around a program hit by stiff NCAA sanctions tied to the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.  A pep band and more than 1,000 supporters turned out to cheer on Nittany Lions players arriving for practice yesterday in State College.  Most wore jerseys and other blue and white attire at the "Rise and Rally" event organized by two former players.  Penn State faces a four-year postseason ban and lost scholarships because of the scandal.
