The Miami Heat and Washington Wizards have taken the openers of their respective NBA Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. LeBron James scored 27 points and the Miami Heat continued their bid for a three-peat by topping Charlotte 99-88. Nene dropped in 24 points and the Wizards erased a 13-point deficit in a 102-93 triumph in Chicago.
Game One of the NBA's Western Conference playoffs are complete following wins by the San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers. Tim Duncan finished with 27 points and the Spurs went on a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to beat Dallas 90-85. LaMarcus Aldridge poured in 36 points and Damian Lillard capped his 31-point night by hitting the go-ahead free throws with 17 seconds left in overtime in the Blazers' 122-120 victory at Houston.
The Milwaukee Brewers needed five extra innings to pick up their third straight win and improve to a major league-best 14-5. Khris Davis homered in the 14th inning to give the Brewers a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh. The game also featured a benches-clearing melee that began after Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez admired his long drive that almost cleared the fence in the third inning. Pitcher Gerrit Cole took exception and exchanged words with Gomez, who slid into third with a triple before approaching Cole. Milwaukee's Martin Maldonado came from the bench and threw a punch that knocked the hat off Pirates outfielder Travis Snider. Gomez, Snider and Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron were ejected.
The Boston Red Sox held an emotional 20-minute pregame ceremony honoring victims of the Boston Marathon bombings along with law enforcement officials, medical personnel, runners and race volunteers before last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles. With canvasses of handwritten notes from each of the 50 states being held on the outfield warning track from the left field corner in front of the Green Monster around to the Pesky Pole, a number of victims came walking in from the left-field corner to a loud ovation. Just over a year ago, two bombs exploded near the finish line less than a mile from Fenway Park, killing three and injuring over 260 others. The Red Sox won last night’s game over the Orioles 6-5.
