Memphis locked up the final Western Conference playoff berth as Zach Randolph finished with 32 points and nine rebounds in the Grizzlies' 97-91 win at Phoenix.  Mike Miller had 21 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who will face the Spurs or Thunder in the opening round.

The Indiana Pacers have wrapped up the top seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs with help from Washington as the Wizards downed Miami 114-93.  Trevor Ariza scored 25 points for the Wizards, who shot 59% and made 14 three-pointers.  Michael Beasley scored 18 points while the Heat rested LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

United States swimmer Michael Phelps is coming out of retirement and will take part in an event in Mesa, Ariz., on April 24-26, with an eye on possibly competing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.  The last time the 22-time Olympic medal-winner competed was at the 2012 Games.

The WNBA's Tulsa Shock selected Nebraska’s Jordan Hooper as the 13th overall pick and the first pick of the second round yesterday.  Hooper, the Big Ten Player of the Year and three-time All-American, will join a Tulsa team that finished 11-23 in 2013.  They were last in the six-team Western Conference and 15 games behind WNBA champion Minnesota.  Hooper finished her NU career with 2,357 points and 1,110 rebounds.  Training camp starts April 27 and the WNBA season begins in mid-May.

Creighton sophomore Reagan Fowler was 8-15 with four extra base hits and eight RBI, earning the BIG EAST Player of the Week.  He also scored seven runs and smacked four extra base hits all against Georgetown.

The Nebraska volleyball team has landed a home-grown recruit.  Lincoln North Star sophomore Sarah Allick made an oral commitment Sunday night to play for the Huskers beginning in 2016 according to the Lincoln Journal Star.  Allick was a second-team all-city and honorable mention all-state selection last fall after slamming 210 kills and registering 128 ace blocks in helping the 22-11 Navigators reach the Class 'A' State Tournament.  She was offered a scholarship from Creighton last summer and was being recruited by a number of Big Ten and Big 12 schools before she committed.

Wayne State throwers Carly Fehringer and Sara Wells shared NSIC Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week honors after their performances over the weekend at the Sioux City Relays and Concordia Invitational in Seward.  Wells, a junior from Albion, set a new school record and recorded the top mark in the shot put in NCAA Division II Saturday with a mark of 52’ 4” at the Concordia Invitational in Seward.  She broke the previous school record of 51’ 11 ¾” set in 2008 by Katie Wilson.  Wells also won the discus at Saturday’s Concordia Invite with a throw of 153’ 6”.  Fehringer, a senior from Wayne, won the hammer throw on Friday at the Sioux City Relays with a heave of 198’ 0” to help WSC sweep the top four finishes in the hammer throw.  Saturday at the Concordia Invitational in Seward, Fehringer won the hammer throw again with a season-best mark of 205’ 10”, which now leads NCAA Division II by four feet.

The Nebraska Coaches Association is pleased to announce the athletes and coaches for the NCA Boys’ and Girls’ All-Star games.  Athletes will be placed on specific teams in June.  The 35th Annual NCA Girls’ Basketball All-Star will be played at Lincoln North Star High School on Monday, July 22 followed by the 46th Annual Boys’ Basketball NCA All-Star game.  Among the selections for the boys game include Wayne’s Jalen Barry, Twin River’s Connor Heier, O’Neill St. Mary’s Adam Moon, Pierce’ Lane Rohrich, and Luke Hegemann of Howells/Dodge.  Twin River coach Tod Heier will be the head coach of the ‘Blue’ Team while Mike Emory of Pierce will be an assistant for the ‘Red’ team.  Among the selection for the girls game include Pender’s Paige Ballinger, Lindsay Holy Family’s Kaylee Jensen, Wakefield’s Lauren Lehmkuhl, Wynot’s Maggie Schulte, Columbus’ Bailey Smith, Homer’s Brandan Tighe, and Cameron Eddie of Laurel/Concord/Coleridge.  Wynot’s Steve Wieseler will be the head coach for the ‘Blue’ Team.
