Norfolk Catholic football team survives Columbus Lakeview in opener
The three-time defending state champion Norfolk Catholic football team survived a scare from Columbus Lakeview last night winning 31-27 at Norfolk's Veterans Memorial Field. The Vikings, who led 14-0 after one quarter, and 27-24 with 2:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, watched the Knights' Jackson Love gallop 50 yards for a score with 1:50 remaining to give Norfolk Catholic a 31-27 victory. Love ran for 219 yards off 28 carries and three touchdowns in the win. Love had T-D runs of 2, 42, and 50 yards in the victory. Columbus Lakeview led 20-10 at half-time. The Vikings' Mark Jarecki ran for two touchdowns and caught five balls for 71 yards in the loss. Quarterback Jack Shadley was 14-32 through the air for 167 yards and ran for 95 yards off 15 carries including a 41 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. With the win, the Knights are now 14-0 against Columbus Lakeview in the history of the matchup, and have extended their opening night win streak to 17 games dating back to 1996. The Knights will visit Bishop Neumann next week while the Vikings hosts Fairbury.
