Sheriff Gets Permission to Hire Additional Deputy
MADISON - Madison County Sheriff Vern Hjorth has received permission from the Board of Commissioners to add a deputy to his staff. At this week’s meeting of the County Board, Hjorth explained that many of his deputies have been with the county long enough that they qualify for three weeks of vacation each year. He says one deputy currently spends most of his scheduled time covering for officers who are on vacation or out for other reasons. The sheriff estimated the cost of equipping a vehicle, salary and benefits at about $40,000, but said the deputy would not be hired until mid-way through the budget year, lessening the initial impact. Commissioners authorized Hjorth to hire the extra deputy as well as to hire a replacement for another long-time deputy who is moving to Otoe County. With the new hire, Madison County will have nine full-time deputies.
