Sen. Scheer Wants Simpler School Funding

NORFOLK - As the 2014 Nebraska legislative session kicks off Wednesday, Norfolk State Senator Jim Scheer is hoping for some changes in the K-12 funding formula.  Scheer says the education committee traveled all over the state last year, talking with citizens about education funding.  Scheer says before any significant change can be made in the funding formula, the legislature needs to define what kind of education is being funded. Should schools provide a wide range of activities? Should students have access to four years of math and science or only three? What are those classes that every student in the state should be able to access?Scheer says he doesn’t expect any dramatic changes in the formula this year, but does think some changes will be phased in over the next two or three years.
