Schools Close for Bitter Cold

NORFOLK - Wind chills in the 30-below-zero range caused many schools in Northeast Nebraska to call off classes for today. In Norfolk, Lutheran High Northeast and Norfolk Catholic Schools were closed. Norfolk Public students are not scheduled to return from their Christmas break until tomorrow. Some businesses also opened late or were closed today. The problem was something meteorologists are calling a "polar vortex" which is pulling arctic air from the North Pole as far south as the Gulf Coast. A wind chill warning remains in effect for our area until midnight tonight, with temperatures forecast to hit 8-below overnight. But the cold will not last long. The Weather Eye Weather Center is calling for a high tomorrow of 26 degrees with partly sunny skies.
