Safety Tips for Wood Burning Stoves
TEKAMAH - Fires caused by fireplaces and wood burning stoves are fairly common - and preventable. Burt County Extension Educator John Wilson urges homeowners to clean chimneys and pipes from fireplaces and wood burning stoves. Wilson says if you are burning wood in a fireplace mostly for the aesthetics, use cottonwood, maple and elm. These woods produce a brighter flame and go out quickly. He says if the purpose of the fire is heat, heavier woods like ash and oak are preferred.
