News Briefs:

Lawmakers are scheduled to hear public input on Nebraska's tax system. Sen. Galen Hadley of Kearney, chairman of the Legislature's Tax Modernization Committee, announced the public hearing schedule on Tuesday. The committee was created to explore possible tax reforms.  Five meetings have been scheduled so far including one in Norfolk, Thursday, September 26 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Northeast Community College.

A judge says an Indiana doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school must remain in jail to await trial. Judge Lawrence Barrett ruled yesterday morning that no bond would be set for Dr. Anthony Garcia.  Garcia, of Terre Haute, Ind., was arrested in Illinois last week and extradited Thursday to a jail in Omaha. He is accused of shooting to death Creighton University pathologist Roger Brumback and fatally stabbing Brumback's wife, Mary, in May.  Garcia is also accused in the fatal stabbings of 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family's housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, in March 2008.  Brumback and Thomas Hunter's father fired Garcia from a Creighton residency program in 2001.

The ability of farmers and ranchers to irrigate Nebraska crops contributed $11 billion to Nebraska's economy last year. That finding comes through a new study chartered by the Nebraska Farm Bureau to identify the importance of water for irrigation during one of the worst droughts in the state's history.  Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says the study, conducted by the Des Moines research firm Decision Innovation Solutions, provides an estimate of the total impact that irrigated agriculture had on the Nebraska economy in 2012. The study showed that Nebraska would have had about 31,000 fewer jobs without irrigation.

A 42-year-old Creston woman has been given four years of probation for felony child abuse. Janelle Gertsch had pleaded no contest to three counts after prosecutors dropped two other counts. Gertsch was sentenced last week in Platte County District Court. Prosecutors say Gertsch and her boyfriend, Larry Einspahr Jr., beat and spanked her 12-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter on multiple occasions. In May Einspahr was sentenced to 30 to 36 months in prison.

Midland University President Ben Sasse has filed paperwork to establish his candidacy for U.S. Senate.  Sasse has been conducting a statewide "listening tour" this summer to introduce himself to Nebraskans and weigh whether he would run for U.S. Senate. He joins two other Republicans in the race - former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn and Omaha attorney Bart McLeay - to replace Sen. Mike Johanns, who is not seeking re-election in 2014.
