The Huskers, the lowest remaining seed of the eight teams, earned a spot in the field by winning two of three games against three-seed Oregon in last week’s NCAA Super Regional in Eugene, Oregon. Nebraska advanced to its seventh Women’s College World Series in school history, its first since 2002 and its third under 21st-year Head Coach Rhonda Revelle. The Huskers are 45-14 on the season while Washington is 43-15.
Wayne State has announced the decision to suspend its men’s and women’s intercollegiate golf programs beginning in the 2013-14 season. The suspension of these two sports affects ten student athletes with five being women and five men. The suspension of these sports will move Wayne State from sponsoring 15 intercollegiate programs to 13. Any student athlete who was receiving aid in the form of an athletic scholarship will maintain that scholarship through the 2013-14 academic year. Men’s and women’s golf will still be sponsored at the college, but at a club level. This will offer current participants the continued opportunity to compete if they so desire.

The Norfolk Fire Division responded to 2 fires yesterday. A garage in Norfolk suffered about $3,000 in damage in a fire reported at 7:22 Wednesday morning. Norfolk Fire Captain Lyle Lutt says crews were called to 704 Nebraska Avenue, where they found moderate smoke coming from the two-car detached garage. The fire was extinguished quickly, and the fire was contained to the area of origin. Lutt says 16 firefighters and four apparatus spent about an hour at the site, overhauling the structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Lutt says the property is owned by Russell Wilcox and occupied by Sunnei Swanson. Norfolk Fire responded to a second fire at Nucor Cold Finish at 2301 West Omaha Avenue. When firefighters arrived plant workers had already successfully extinguished the fire and there was minor smoke in the building. Lyle Lutt said it took 26 firefighters and 3 apparatuses about 20 minutes to overhaul the machine and make sure the fire was out. Plant Staff assisted Norfolk Fire throughout the incident. No injuries to employees or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the cost is yet to be determined.

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska says he will not run for the U.S. Senate. Fortenberry made the announcement on Wednesday. The five-term congressman says in an email message that he intends to seek re-election to the House in 2014. His announcement came days after Republican Gov. Dave Heineman announced that he would not seek the seat held by current U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns. Johanns, a Republican, has chosen not to seek re-election in 2014. Heineman would have been a heavy favorite if he had entered the race, and his decision not to run has created a wide-open field. Fortenberry says the decision wasn't easy, but after deliberating with his wife and their five children, he feels it's the right choice.
